We are thinking about getting this for our friends child. But I was looking for some advice on which one to get. The child will be 5 would you get the one that ages 2-6 or the 6-12. This child knows alphabet, numbers, colors, & is starting to read & sound things out. I was looking for advice as teachers/parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
do you have a web site for this? I have not had it in a while but we used to get it. I would recomend the 2-6 because the older level has much holder reading levels of interest, the intrests for the child would be best to hit it in his interest level kwim?
That's what I was thinking. http://www.highlights.com/ If you click on the top where it says highlights children magazine. You can kinda scope them out. I did that & am thinking of the younger one. But I just thought I'd check on here to see if anyone has any advice or have used either.
Yes I think the one that goes to 7 yrs old , the High Fives? It looks like it would be good still for at least a year or so... that is the one I would choose.
I recently saw the younger version at the dentist. If you want the child to be able to read it herself, go with the younger version. It wasn't "babyish" or anything but had larger font print for a earlier reader (but was still probably a 2nd grade level in some articles)....those meant to be parent/child bonding type things. THANKS so much for your advice. I haven't seen them really since I was younger & thought you might have seen them!!! I was thinking the younger as well, so he could do them on their own a little bit.
Oops. Didn't realize it was for a boy when I said "read herself"....a boy would enjoy them though.....my son liked the "you find it type pictures". We didn't get to read the entire thing since our turn at the dentist came fairly quickly (which is always a good thing).
I just got an advertisement in the mail for this the other day! Also a friend had told me about their mysteries club, but I couldn't remember what it was called, and honestly had forgotten that it was based from Highlights. (So thanks!) Yay. Something for us to subscribe to!
We just signed up for Highlights too. (through the ps no less, the teacher gets credits toward classroom stuff.) I think both boys will like it. I liked it when I was little. We had tried it before. (probably when ds11 was in 2nd or 3rd grade) but it was too difficult, and I found the stories didn't really hold his attention. Now I think they both will read it fine. AND they are both interested in poetry. I am hoping they will notice the reader submissions.
