History is something that I have neglected in our HS. I've looked at SOTW and MOH and haven't gotten either because I don't know where to start. My kids are 11,11 and 15. What history recommendations do you all have? Thanks.

I really like MOH. We're doing vol. 4 this year.

Definitely MoH. I think SotW would probably be too light for their ages. We're starting over with vol 1 this year.

The book series 'History of US' by Joy Hakim. Very well done.

With MoH you I would suggest you start with Vol. 1 for your two youngest. Your eldest should be working at a more advanced pace than what MoH is really laid out for or you need to do a lot of the independent research activities provided in the book. I normally recommend for high school working through Vol 1 and 2 in one year and then 3 and 4 in the 2nd year ( I know 4 is not fully out but will be soon).

Agreed... as a high school course, I'd do two books per year. For the younger ones, I'd recommend doing the book as-is, and focus on the middle or upper activities. I'd also come up with your own tests for a high school transcript grade. The tests in the book are way too simple for high school. Do research papers, historical literature, etc.

Vol 4 is kinda out. If you pre-order it, they will give you a download of the first quarter. And then they'll send it to you, hopefully sometime in September. One big advantage of MOH is that you can teach all your kids at the same time relatively easily.

With MoH there are also yahoo groups for each of the books that have plans laid out with suggested readings, dvds and such. There is also a MoH yahoo group for doing the program with High School students.

The Vol.4 download is really nice. I know the expected ship date for the book is either Sept. or Oct. but I have not seen anything official from Linda or Bright Ideas with the exact date yet (unless I missed it somehow). I can't wait till it actually arrives.

Actually, I had trouble with the downloads. Thanks for reminding me, Mschickie, that I need to call them today about that! DH and I had fun looking through the coloring pages and guessing what they represented!

You either need to email mohshipping@yahoo.com or you might find someone who can help you on the Bright Ideas site. If you call the phone numbers on the Mystery of History page you will get a volunteer who is there to help answer questions on the curriculum (one of them is me ;) )

Hey, MsChickie! I did call, but it wasn't you (I asked!). I guess you actually work for MOH, and I ordered it through Bright Ideas. But anyway, they knew right away what the problem was. I guess it needs to be opened in Adobe, and for some reason Adobe isn't the default program on our computer. It kept trying to open it with something else. So now all I have to do is right click (instead of left click) and specifically tell it to use Adobe. I'll be SO glad to get the REAL book, though. I absolutely hate having to use the computer for it!

Glad they were able to get it straight for you. I do not work for Bright Ideas, just a volunteer over at MOH (so that is where my number is). Did they tell you that vol. 4 got pushed back to Oct/Nov. now? I was so bummed to hear that. I want to see the actual hard copy. It is not that big of a deal for me though since we are just finishing Vol II and will be working on Vol III most of this year.

Oh, no!!! No, they didn't tell me that! We finished Vol. 3 a good number of years back. I REALLY don't like working without a hard copy! I wonder if they're going to have to do Quarter 2 as a download, too....

I don't know. I am hoping they have it out by the end of Oct. I get a bunch of calls about it.
