We are using Mystery of History and are in volume 2 right now. I know we are going to have to use something else for American History. My question is, would it be better to do US History next year or after we study volume 3 of MoH?

MoH 2 ends in the 1450s. Volume 3 is from 1455-1707.

My sons will be in third and second grades next year if that matters. Also, I'm leaning toward using Sonlight but I'm not sure if I want to do the two year or one year option.

I do not think it really matters at this age. Sonlight starts off with explorers in Core D (year 1 for American). If you do go with Sonlight I would go with the 2 year program at this age (or do the one year program over two years). There is alot of information in there and it might be much for your younger child if you rush it.

Volume 3 is the red book right? We really enjoyed the red book. I would go with it first then go to US after that. If you do use the red book of moh I have a copy I was trying to sell last fall but my persons decided they could not get it after all.
The work book is partly used though, but the text is in good shape.
