Has anyone had success with homemade dishwasher detergent?

I'd like to try some, but don't know what works.

I'll have to do a search in the older posts. I was thinking someone had a recipe for this. I'd like to try it, too.

Also, can you really use straight vinegar in place of Jet Dry?

Yes on the straight vinegar. You can use it in the dishwasher, but also as the rinse in your laundry. It works in breaking down hard water, so it doesn't leave spots and it acts to soften clothes. It is actually better for your clothing, they last longer. If you still want to soften them more and insure no static cling add two to three tennis balls in the dryer. And no, you don't get a vinegar smell when the clothes are done. Use white vinegar.

I almost forgot to add a caution. Some recipes for homemade dishwasher detergent have harmful ingredients. It leaves a residue that can have you winding up in the hospital. I will try to find that recipe again and list the ingredient when I do.

 When we built our house (it's a tiny little place), dh's one thing he just had to have was a dishwasher. It actually made the final cut when even the hot tub had to be scratched from the plans! It's the little things in life, huh?
