I just picked up an automatic ice cream maker at wal-mart for under $18.00. It will make 4 quarts of ice cream. I know some may have nice big ones that make more, but we were all so happy. My kids are having some now and are so happy! We made vanilla first. It taste so awesome, like snow cream. Next we plan to make chocolate. (There goes my diet!LOL)

COOL! When can I come visit you?! ;) We used to have a hand-turn one when I was little. It was so fun! Glad you were able to get that---I know it'll help you have a much better summer! :)

I was just thinking about homemade ice cream earlier today. You have inspired me--off to Wal-mart tomorrow.

See if your library carries "Ben and Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book". (Yes, by THE "Ben & Jerry"!) It's a great ice cream recipe book, and it's actually fun to read! I enjoyed it so much, I actually went out and bought it!

4kidsmom---you should ask WalMart for a commission if a bunch of HSSpot ladies suddenly run there and get icecream makers!

Oh yes, I could do that with alot of things. My dh says he should buy stock in wal-mart because I am there so much. LOL

And the Ben & Jerrys recipe book:shock: Oh yes I will have to find out about that. I used to sit and eat a whole pint of that all by myself. It said it was 4 servings in a pint. I don`t know who they were trying to kid. lol

We are having a cookout with mt family this Memorial day and I plan on using my new ice cream maker ALOT.

I love homemade ice cream. Have you ever done the ice cream in a bag thing where you shake zip lock bags? We did it at church once and it was so much fun. We put the sugar and cream and stuff in a quart bag and put that in a gallon bag with salt and ice and let the kids shake and run around with them and then eat the ice cream straight out of the little bag with plastic spoon.

My dh has been bugging me to get a homemade ice cream maker. I am only against it because one I am 20-25 pounds overweight..lol...and I have no space for it. However, after hearing how good it is...I just may get one.

That is my favorite stuff! Maybe I need to pick one up for Memorial Day weekend. You know, if I could just make ice cream for us, then we wouldn't have to leave the house and use all that gas...I think it is really for the best that I do this!

I got one for mother's day. Its by Rival. But its so expensive to make it often. We are planning on making more this weekend. I got some heavy duty samples from a suplier for ice creameries and bakeries. (don't ask how--LOL) but next we want to make dream sicle flavor.

BTW, Amy, did you find out how your recipe did in the contest? (Sorry! That's off-topic!)

    recipe

    Hazelnut Ice Cream

1 quart Hazelnut coffee creamer (use fat free, sugar free, or regular creamer)
    1 cup toasted hazelnuts

Assemble and add creamer as directed by your user instructions. When the ice cream is beginning to thicken, after about 15 to 20 minutes, add the toasted and chilled nuts. (See below.) Continue freezing until thickened, about 25 to 30 minutes total freezing time. Remove to a freezer container and store in your freezer until as firm as you want for serving, about 1 /12 to 2 hours is usually long enough.
NOTE: To toast hazelnuts, chop if needed and toss with 1 tablespoon of melted butter and place them on a baking sheet in a 350° oven. Check after 5 minutes and stir. Continue baking until lightly browned, about 3 to 5 minutes longer. Cool and then place in the freezer until very cold before adding to the ice cream.

    Butter Pecan Ice Cream

Make as directed for Hazelnut Ice Cream but substituting Butter Pecan coffee creamer for the hazelnut creamer, and pecans for the haxelnuts.

    FROZEN YOGURT

You also may make frozen yogurt in your ice cream maker. Use 2 cups of yogurt, regular or diet type, and 2 cups of puréed fruit that has been wwell drained. Mix your ingredients and taste for sweetness. Stir in 1/2 cup of milk. soy milk, or rice milk. Freeze as for any other ice cream recipe.

Jackie: I'll hear some time in October for the pillsbury bake off contest.

But I'll post the recipe on a new theread later.

I made a new recipe for cinnamon rolls and DH said I should have kept it a secret to enter next time. But I don't think so, I'll share that too.

I would love to have an ice cream maker!
I wonder if you put some in an insulated package and shipped it over night to me, if it would still be good!
I used to have an ice cream maker but I never had luck with it. Maybe it was just old. It belonged to my mother-in-law and I couldn't seem to make it work.

Patty the new cheap ones are easy (ok I was hoping for a cuisinart) you put your mixture in, put the lid on and put it in the outer container and put the layers of salt and ice and put the agitator on (the top motor) and plug it in, it stops running when its done, you can serve it as soft serve or put the plug in and put it in the freezer. Add chocolate chips, or nuts or what ever near the end when it starts making a "new" noise--- like its starting to get thick and having a hard time turning the noise gets louder.

My recipe was using scalded milk and I had to refrigeratee it for 30 minutes after I did that then did the ice cream churning thing.

and the new more expensive ones you freeze the container, put in your stuff and just plug it in and it doesn't need salt and ice.

We had a hand crank one that I remember my dad using snow to make the ice cream! My sis can't have dairy products (she was born without the enzymes that break down the lactose) and I remember my mom making ice cream using the nursoy formula. It actually wasn't all that bad!
