This is the third article in a series on homeschooling. Since it comes from a liberal site, gird yourselves if you venture into the comment section. http://www.salon.com/life/feature/2010/03/15/home_school_3/index.html
This comment really cements my decision even more because of the underlying message: The message I see here is a commonplace message outside the home. We want kids to be like the community. We want kids to be taught our truth, and we'll teach them to doubt their parents. Some of the main reasons I chose to home educate. Here they are, unabashedly promoted as a means to persuade parents that they are too stupid to provide a well-rounded education, and to persuade the public that they need to watch out for stupid parents who will teach their children a backward view of reality. They are undermining parents, undermining religious values, and they don't even try to hide it anymore.
Wow! I have been condemned! Poor me! I get to spend all day with the wonderful blessing God has given me. I get to see their successes, comfort them when they fail. Poor me. I get to be responsible for training their character, for exposing them to the wonderful world outside of the classroom. Poor me! I get to take my kids on fieldtrips while other children are sitting in a desk. Poor me! I will know where my kids are, who they are associating with, what they are being taught, who is teaching it, and how well they are learning. Poor me! Feel sorry for me yet? The poster of that comment apparently does! Oh how about this one? I am just lazy! Another gem. How dare your 5 year old not be able to sit quietly! How immature!
Oh, I couldn't even get into this, I would probably be so mad, I'd fume right through the keys on my keyboard and set my office on fire LOL
Actually, I appreciated what I read in the article. Research showing that having 5yo's sit all day doing academics isn't appropriate. They should be playing instead. Well, DUH!!!
