    ugh...grrrrr......

how is segregation by race wrong, but segregation by gender preference or whatever you call it is OK? because they want their own school? it's still segregation! What if vegetarians demand separate schools next? and then people with mold allergies next? and then what?

If only Illinois were closer to Cali, we could have hope that it will just fall into the ocean someday!!

    !!

Wow. I knew I agreed with Obama on a few points, but it's always interesting to find another one:

Of course, I wonder if he factors in all of the parental teaching that goes on, even for public school kids?

I think the above Obama statement is ok...but being skeptic I am, the "it's not who their parents are" stands out to me. I went to public school my whole life and to college. While I had teachers who molded me, the main influences on my life were my parents. I know, it may seem I am nickpicking...but it just stands out to me. This statement would give me the heebie jeebies no matter who said it.

Oh and all the race talk I find boring. I am sick to death of race always being an issue. I think its racist that just because we have a black president race is an issue everytime we turn around. I can't even take it seriously anymore. That is not to say that I lack an understanding of race or compassion for oppression...it's to say talking about Michelle Obama having straight hair and Joe Wilson being a racist and all that garbage is just plain boring. Let's just move on.

Oh that was a very tongue-in-cheek agreement, Ava. I'm sure Obama didn't even factor in the whole parents-as-teachers.

I agree, the whole race issue is a minimizer. Thankfully, my experience has been that *most* of my liberal friends - not all but most - who are (mostly) very intelligent and educated do NOT believe that MOST conservatives are racially motivated. Just like the conservatives who ARE racist get all the airtime, so do the liberals who think ALL people who oppose them...sorry, Obama...are racist get the airtime. It's an attempt to minimize the opposition and, as I told one of my friends, intellectually false. But it's a discussion-ender.

I think that statement quoted is quite comical... he just blamed the teachers for the failing schools without even realizing it.
Just one more reason I love him....

Nope I disagree. Its not who their parents are. My parents are great, but because they worked so much had very little influence on me. Also, they have not influenced me monetarily (thank god - they both suck with $). I just don't believe in that whole "environment makes everything" argument. Granted, parents can affect situations greatly, but its not a requirement. And a good parent, bad teacher will affect a child more than a good parent no teacher. Now, of course, the perfect combo is a good parent that is also a teacher...very rare in ps - extremely common in hs!!! Now I just feel bad for ps teachers....;)

Its definitely more to do with parents than the teachers: lets face it, if you are a doctor's son, you are more likely to be a doctor, if you are a gypsy, you are more likely to be a gypsy yourself. Of course, many buck this trend!
