I do not consider myself excellent at language arts. But, is anyone else bothered by simple homophones being used wrong. I'll start with one. Share your favorite!

There - a place- Put the toy over there.
Their - possessive - This is their toy.
They're - contraction for they are - They're going to the store.

Yep! I can't even begin to reply to this. Language arts has always been my strong point, so I'm constantly catching mistakes ... billboards, facebook, forums, etc. It doesn't bother me so much online, because people are typing in a hurry and usually multitasking. Billboards, though??? Those have to go through several levels of approval before they're made!

I had to make Ben a chart for
    our - belong to us
    hour - 60 minutes
are - a plural "be" verb; they ARE
or - indicates a choice; this OR that
ore - a mineral in the ground

their - belonging to them; contains the word 'heir', an inheritor
there - in that place; contains the word 'here', a place
they're - contraction for 'they are'

What bothers me is when I type it wrong and spell check automatically corrects it to the wrong one. Then I miss it and poof! My typos are famous, but spell check has made me have to work twice and hard with the one side of my brain that I try to use later in my writing. lol

Lol, TM, and you've an error in that paragraph that got past spell checker!!! I know from experience THAT'S a loosing battle. And for Faythe, who can't really spell in the first place, it's even worse.

Oh yes, I hate my iPod spell check. I keep meaning to disable it. I'd rather have a typo than a completely different word that leaves people scratching their heads.

Here's a doozy. Not a homophone (iPod tried to change that to homophobe, lol!) but my husband's old boss would use phantom in place of fathom.

Except and accept I've seen confused! Faythe has an electronic speller device, and they have what they call "confusables". You type one in, and they list all the others with their meanings, so you can decided on the "correct" one.

This is irritating to me also.

I find it incredible that people use "to" instead of "too".

Also with the way that stores and such use creative spelling-it has made it harder for some people to know when they are wrong.

    For example:

    "lite" instead of "light".
    "valu" instead of "value"

One thing about Chic-fil-a that bothers me is that they are always spelling things wrong on their billboards and stuff.

These things are the reason ds8 has so much trouble reading. He is appalled at the rules some words have that others don't, and why they mean such different things when they seem so similar. Words like that make him crazy, so he will probably end up being one of those people who get them wrong every time and make the rest of us crazy!
