Has anyone ever used this? I am getting a couple of the k books for dd to work with. They were the closest that I could find to where she is actually at with reading. We have not done any formal phonics with her yet but she has already picked up a bunch of the ideas and "rules" Any opinions on it?
No but I'm interested in it for probably 2nd grade for my son. He's working thru Hooked on Phonics now and it's just right for him at this point. A friend used the 1st grade stuff and her daughter was a pretty advanced reader for 1st grade so I'm hoping that once DS finishes all 5 HOP levels (which is supposed to be thru 2nd grade) that he'll be reading for their 2nd grade. We should finish HOP during 1st grade. He did HOP level 1 and 2 (and started 3) in K this year.
I used Horizons Phonics for K but we ran into some trouble. Looking back I could work with it okay now that I have more experience. I had not taught my student the sounds of the letters before using Horizons Phonics and it seemed to me that they expected the student to have the knowledge already. If your student has this already, your most likely all set. I still have my Horizons Phonics materials and will use them with my second dd, but not until after we finish the ABand C level primers from the Explode the Code materials.
I used it for dd for 1st grade this year. We liked it and it was easy to follow. She didn't really "need" it because she already read above grade level. But I thought it was important for her to learn the rules and it wasn't JUST phonics. I still have the teacher's guide and the 2nd workbook that only have the first few lessons missing if anyone is interested.
