It depends on your state, but by and large compulsory schooling doesn't begin until a child is 7. So there are no requirements at all until then.

I live in MO, and you don't have to track hours until the age of 7. At that age, it then is 1000 hours; 600 for core and 400 for electives.

I agree with the others. Even if you had to comply with 1000 hours none of them HAVE to be "sit down at the desk" hours.

You definitely need to check your state laws. Here in MA, you don't start tracking hours until age 6. Then we are required to do 180 days/ 900 hours. We school year round, so I don't really bother keeping track of hours, I just check off the days on a 180 day chart and call it a day.

The best part about teaching the younger grades is that so much of their learning isn't done sitting down. Most K social studies programs are about our community. That means you can plan fun field trips to the firestation, police station, post office, and etc and it is all hours for school.

Almost everything my K student does is a game or a field trip right now and we are having so much fun with learning.

Who says you need to sit?

The hours can be counted whenever you watch an educational program--Sesame Street, or whatever...

    Outside playtime is PE.

You can be very creative in how you count hours, without being dishonest.

My youngest is in Kindergarten. We spend about 1 hour a day on sit down work, the rest - which is so hard to quantify - is life learning. :)

Our state doesn't require days/hours tracking until 8. Totally agree with recommendation on checking your state's laws. I know there are a few that require tracking Kindergarten.
