Since it is cold and wet out, I feel like I have not even so much as gone for a walk in months. I am feeling my age more and more. So being strapped down in the house, not being able to do much, other than maybe run up and down the stairs, is really getting to me. I am literally dreaming about exercising. My back hurts, I am putting on weight. I do get on the floor and stretch and try to do things like sit ups and leg lifts. How about everyone here? When it is cold and you cannot go out, short of going completely crazy, what do you do? The kids all have classes and such they get to go to. But I just sit outside their classes, holding still. Or sit in my house, holding still, or sit in the car driving them places, holding still. It is really getting to me. I have gained 15 pounds since the cold weather set in, maybe November? Anyway, I would love ideas and suggestions. My back is hurting, everything is hurting from the lack of being able to move. It does not help that I had such a complicated birth and could not really do anything for a few months after so I have been completely sedentary for months now, since August for sure.
When my ds is at hockey I walk around the rink. In the mornings ds and I try to get out about 6:45am and climb the sledding hill. During the weekdays in the evening I try to do sit ups and push ups. It doesn't always happen but at least 3 days a week I get it done. If I have a choice to walk or drive I try to walk it.
((HUGS)) I understand feeling stir crazy in the winter without movement! I'm lucky that I have a treadmill in the basement, so I've been using that for at least 15-20 minutes a day (or I try to do it every day). Other than that though I haven't had much movement. Maybe you could check out a workout video from the library or something to workout to. I have one or two videos....I just don't put them on and do them. My mom does this 15 minute fast walk inside her house to keep her moving for a bit. Some days we go to our indoor mall and walk a few laps. Other than that I'm waiting for spring to come! Oh ya...I suppose bundling up and going out for a walk isn't out of the question for me....I just don't like the cold too much. I wish you all the best with movement in the winter!
There is a video series by a lady called Leslie Sansome. They are walking videos that a friend and I do in the winter. See if your library has some!
I got me a walking CD that Carl put onto an MP3 player for me. I try to walk for a half-hour after staff meetings at church on Tuesdays (we have a great gym at my church!), and again two days at the local rec center.
I dance while I do my housework to music. It motivates me to move. I can't walk far since I am not fully recovered from my knee injury (torn knee cartilage) so I find other ways to exercise. I do isometric exercises in the hallway while I am working on laundry. I agree with the others about working out with an exercise DVD.
I have a treadmill downstairs that I use at least 3X a week. on the days when I dont' want to run on it I use comcasts onDemand exercise programs and I pick and choose what I want to do.
40 gallons of hot water from house to barn twice daily using 5 gallon buckets for animals. Hay and grain twice daily for horses which means up and down barn steps to get hay. Turn animals out which requires walking 2 1400 lb critters from barn to field and return trip in evening. Chase two steers all over creation to get them into field about 3 times a week if we bring them in for bad weather! Which has been frequently this year! Thats just outside exercise! You don't want to know about the lovely extras of rural farm life inside! Marty
I use Tae bo videos. Also exercise tv's website has tons of free workout videos that I use. The start at beginners, all the way to advanced.
Momofafew: I'm not sure where you're located, but here, we just keep exercising in the cold outdoors. It's been around 10-20 degrees around here, seemingly for weeks, with accompanying snow. Dh, ds, and I just bundle up and hit the road, walking, but mostly jogging. If I stayed inside all winter I would just go nuts. I think even just the fresh air and more light helps with your mood.
