We have been homeschooling since Aug. When we started we were doing worksheets I printed from websites and from textbooks. The downfall was that my 9 year old DS would throw fits and never wanted to do any of the work. Someone recommended that I spend some time "deschooling" him. They said he needed some time to adjust to being at home instead of in PS. So, now we are going on 3 months. I haven't gave him any work at all. He does play Hooda online and sometimes I find something interesting online and show him, but we are getting bored and I think we should be doing more during the day. It seems like he just watches tv or plays video or computer games all day waiting for PS to get out so he can play outside with his friends. Which he does from about 3:00-6:30. So, my question is how long do I "deschool"?:?

It sounds like you're ready. If you are bored and he is, then I would introduce maybe one subject at a time. Maybe choose his choice- math, science, etc? Something that will get him excited. Do that for a week and then add on another subject- maybe your choice this time and just keep adding until you have all your basis covered.

Maybe the worksheets and textbooks reminded him of of school? Was it a bad experience for him? You could also try a different approach- or curriculum? Not sure what you have but maybe look at what he enjoys best- is he hands on or gets excited over visual things? Maybe do some fun field trips to- have him record them in some way- write about it, draw, etc?? Just trying to think of ways that could get him excited again.

But I would start! Good luck! =)

Sounds to me like he's deschooled....it's time to start. BUT do yourself a favor and do two things. 1) START SLOWLY....only start the first week or two with Math & L/A 2) Set expectations from the get go.

    :)
