We just got a call from my son's piano teacher and she told us she upped her monthly tuition from 85.00 to 110.00 per month (4-1 hour lessons). I think that's pretty steep but have no idea what the going rates are. I'd appreciate any imput into that. Thanks!
Most people around here pay around $10 dollars for half and hour as well. We pay $5 from a friend. I used to take lessons when I was a girl from a high school student. You may even be able to inquire at a local college to see if any of their music majors offer lessons. I don't even think our uppity orchestra people charge that much a month for lessons. Wow!
Ok well, that confirms it. She told me she consulted with other music teachers to come up with that amount. I am shocked because we are not in an affluent city. It's moderate in size but we have an unemployment rate of almost 20%. In fact, we are about 30 minutes from the mortgage meltdown city of Stockton (one of the worst places to live in the US). I'm shocked that she thinks she'll be able to get that much from people around here, with the economy the way it is. I understand she's in a tight financial spot as well, but raise it that high, and you'll scare all you're students away.
It is expensive, but you are getting one hour lessons and comparing it to half hour lessons. Maybe you can ask her for 1/2 lessons to cut the cost? We have a teacher here that seems to have a good hold on most of the homeschool kids we know and she is very expensive. She has them do a 1/2 hour class ( group music class) and 1/2 private lesson each week. She charges 160 a month plus you have to drive to her house twice because the class and lessons are on different days. I decided very early on she was not for us ( because of the cost and that she has the personality of a knat!!!lol) This year we are doing guitar lessons. Our local music store has names of people that teach every instrument that they sell for $15 for a 1/2 lesson. We actually were lucky to get a name of another teacher from a friend that only charges $10 1/2 hour and is even closer to our house!! Good luck in trying to find an answer.
Around here, it depends on the credentials of the teacher. For one with a degree and quite a bit of experience, $40/hr is normal. Something like $15/hr is almost unheard of! I was charging $15 per lesson (30 minutes) 10-15 years ago in rural Arkansas and rural Texas, and I had no shortage of students.
We pay $56 per month for 4 half-hour lessons...but I do know that is more expensive than anywhere else in town. Also, those who do hour lessons are cheaper (Most I know are $18-21) I guess, around here, it's kind of like buying in bulk!
Where I came from it was $80-$150 a month for 4 45 minute lessons. Where I am now it ranges between $40-$80 for 4 30 minute lessons.
I pay $110. That is a full month for two kids. Their lesson is officially a half-hour each, but we NEVER get out in just one hour! I do get a discount for having more than one; she will also come to a person's house, but will add that to the cost.
I think the problem is a $25 jump in price. Maybe if she had raised it only $10 it wouldn't have seemed so bad!
My DD is taking in home violin lessons and we pay $110/month for 1/2 hr once a week. I would love $15/lesson!
That sounds reasonable. I'm paying $12.50 for a half hour lesson, soon to be $25 for an hour. Four of those a month would be $100, in line with what you're paying and I'm out in a rural setting. If she's worth the money, I'd pay it. It's not an outrageous rate.
$10 per 30 minute lesson (that's a good deal around here...normal rate, I think, is $15 per 30 minutes)
