I am getting ready to send in my letter of intent and am wondering how to word that DD will be doing a transition year for the 2010-2011 school year. She just completed 8th grade but is just not ready for high school.

This is what the letter would like:

This letter is to notify you that we intend to home school our child, ______________ DOB____________ , residing at the above address, entering __X__grade for 2010-2011 school year.

Where she just completed 8th grade do I put that she is staying in 8th grade. We are saying, to friends and family, that she is doing a transition year but can I (should I) say that in my letter? Any thoughts?

Do you absolutely have to put a grade level in there? Because if not you could just say that "She completed the 8th grade in the 2009-10 school year," and let them do their own assuming.

Is she just now coming home for her first year homeschooling? If that's the case, then they really don't have a clue where she is gradewise, so you can just put down "entering 8th grade". This is probably what I would do.

OR you could put "entering 9th grade" and just let her take five years to finish high school, so to speak. Kids in public high school often take subjects that are *usually* scheduled for a different grade in high school, like being in 10th grade taking a 9th grade world geography, for instance, or taking Biology in 11th instead of 10th. So she could be "entering 9th grade" this year, next year "9th/10th" (as in completing 9th, moving on to 10th), the next 10th/11th, then 11th/12th, then completing 12th.

I'm with Lindina. In Ohio, you don't have to mention grade level. They even called one year, all upset because I hadn't filled in that blank for Phillip. I just kept repeating to the woman that "the information isn't required by law, and I chose not to give it." The lady was so irritated with me, that she said she just wouldn't process my form if I wasn't willing to give it! I explained that I really didn't care; I was in compliance with what I sent in and had proof that it had been sent in. If the district chose to be non-compliant to the state law, that was THEIR problem, not mine!

Do Not give them additional information in which you are not legally obligated to provide!
