http://psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20070302-000002.html Trashing Teens Psychologist Robert Epstein argues in a provocative book, "The Case Against Adolescence," that teens are far more competent than we assume, and most of their problems stem from restrictions placed on them.
lol, NO really? Wait, the restrictions we place on them are what cause the competence in the first place! IF we did not parent our teens just like we parent our children of younger ages we would not have competent teens! My kids dont know it an they are not here to read it so I can tell you! I trust my teens to follow what we do inside the home when they are out, about 95 % of the time. I know they are human and I expect them to fail, at some points, but I know they have been raised proplerly to this point. Dont tell them that though! I want them to think that I wont allow them to do anything if they loose my trust because its true! When they cause me to be suspicious, I cut back the reigns, so they have to prove themselves. But over all they rae good kids, and are headed in the right direction. Over all I dont really TRUST people though, but you know I think there are two different terms for trusting, lol, You believe in your kids, in that I trust them to do what they know is right in God's eyes. So I guess I trust God to help them? Then To trust people , to do anything but be people? Failable and not able to add up to what I expect them to be? I am learning trust is an earned thing. Sorry I went off on a tangent LOL! I think you all are probably getting used it me by now?
Nellie, that article actually made sense. I believe, as part of our homeschooling agenda, that my kids need a balance between academics, work, service & play. Service has a profound impact on how my kids relate to their world & seems to nip a lot of problems in the bud.
Service: anything my kids do for others that does not involve a monetry reward; ie watering a neighbour's pot plants while they are away, helping with the childrens ministry or the singing at church, making a meal for a shut in, visiting someone sick or in need. The list is pretty endless.
It was just a joke, cuz she said POT plants. That's what people call marijuana, so it was just a play on words!
Ok, all you American ladies, have I struck one of those lovely quirks of the English language where I am miscommunicating beautifully? I am NOT referring to marujuana but to plants you grow in pots. Do you call these potted plants? I have a ficus in a pot in my kitchen that has climbed my walls & spread across my ceiling; it is a pot plant.
Yes we call them potted plants, since pot plants refer to marijuana! That's why I made the joke that it would be illegal here, since marijuana is illegal to grow!
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. Ignacio Estrada" I love that saying, btw! Seems so simple, yet, that's so often NOT the way it's done! It's just a difference in the way different places use the English language! We have differences even between different states here in the USA, so I'm not surprised at the differences in things between Australia and USA! But at least now you know that, here on HSSpot where it doesn't matter! Now, if you ever want to impress someone in the US, don't talk about POT PLANTS!
Yeah, I thought that was a pretty cool quote myself. I like collecting language oddities; it extends my vocab in strange ways. Like nappies V diapers, jam & jelly, & never, ever use the term root out here if you are barracking for a sports team.
Celtic Rose, My kids pastors are going to be in your lovely country this week! I have been learning a lot through a writer group I am on about the difference in sayings, thats why I figured it was a word thing. I love learning the different things, when we have had missionary people in our church I always listened to the odd words they used and tried to incorporate it into my vocabulary! We attend an international church why not put in some international flavor words! OH, and btw, May I use your line about your kids watering the pot plants for your neighbors in a book I am writing? It would fit so well as the characters own a bed and breakfast and they have people from all around go there!
I have an ongoing love affair with languages! If I'm not being too nosey whereabouts will your pastor's kids be visiting? Curious because the differences here are as big as say between Alaska & Florida. You may quote me all you like; I'd be absolutely honoured.
cool thanks! Pastor Gene and wife Susan are going to Sydney ( how do you spell that?) anyway, they are first in Thailand setting up a mission for the future, we have missionaries in Thailand right now and we do short term missions to where we have someone posted to set up further missions and such. We as in our church as a whole. Pastor Gene is our Children's Pastor, our church has a Pastor for youth, children and one for adults, then we have African Pastor ( wife and husband team, they lead missions to Africa once a year at least) a Hungarian Pastor and his wife, and Hispanic pastor who has a couple services in Spanish a week as well as joining in with the rest of the church. We had Philipino pastor but he got called back to Phillipines. OH and w3e have a pastor for Young adults... we live in a highly populated area, we also have leaders over Helping Hands ministry and Womens Ministry ( Im in the last one) where we reach out in our own area and we have a Recovery Pastor who works with revocovery peoples and helps them get in programs and stay straight clean and sober....... lol okay I started to explain that our Kids PAstor, is the pastor over the kids at our church. We are a middle sized church, probably around a thousand people at max on our list but not everyone is in our church or our country.
