We just finished week 3 and I have already ditched my 2nd curriculum for LA!! Maybe this is just a bad LA kinda year??

Hope you can make it work or find a cheap/free replacement for it.

I LOVED MOH, but the boys hated it. So I'm really praying Shurley English goes the other way (I hate it, they love it). We shall see. We'll give it a few weeks.

We're doing Editor In Chief. I did the first one myself, and I couldn't find all the errors!!! But I'll have both Phillip and Faythe work on it together, so we'll see. Then we'll be doing a writing book I picked up at Co-op Registration the other day for free. I guess a local Christian school was changing curriculum, so they dropped off a lot of stuff and said it was free for the taking. The writing was one of a few things I picked up. Then we'll be doing two or three Progeny Press literature guides (a poetry unit and To Kill a Mockingbird for Faythe, Johnny Tremaine and Fahrenheit 451 for Phillip), and last of all, we will be doing Science Roots for vocabulary. It teaches the Latin/Greek roots for the vocabulary in Apologia Biology.

    Shurley English.

We will use it for a bit before I decide. It was also very expensive.

Jackie, we are using Editor in Chief this year too. I have had to look in the back of the book for the answers just about every time. It really is teaching ME a lesson or two!

Exactly! I had already decided to use it with both kids, but after looking it over and seeing how hard it really is, I decided they should do it together. Hopefully, between the two of them, they'll get most of the mistakes. I'll also tell them how many are content mistakes.

It takes awhile to get it figured out and to get into the swing of things. I used level 4 many years ago (when the homeschool editions first came out). The book really is pretty overwhelming...and we ended up skipping a lot of the writing. What we did do that year we enjoyed it and my daughter still remembers it (gosh...that was like 12 years ago!).

I hope you like Shurley. Maybe it is the season for LA changes though. This year I've had to adjust/change reading plans for all 3 kids already!

I always say thats the joy of homeschooling you can change anytime something doesn't work for you or your children

When my kids were in school they used shurley english and hated it! I looked at the books and helped with the homework and yikes! I figured there had to be an easier method. I wasn't impressed and even though I keep hearing it is an excellent program I just couldn't seem to see it. I hope you can find something that you like!!

Well. I'm about 95% certain that I'll be ditching Shurley for my 2nd grader. While information gathering, I was assured that he'd be just fine if I started him in level 1. BUT... he isn't a reader yet! If he's not reading/writing within the first 2 weeks, it's going to be impossible for him to do this.

Amie, if he's not reading yet, he doesn't need grammar yet. He needs to focus on reading, obviously.

Several years ago, we had foster kids who had to be in public school (my DS was homeschooling). They were using the Shurley method in ps at that time. The kids could sing all the little jingles just fine, but had NO clue what it was about.

That was the first thing I thought of Lindina! A child who isn't reading doesn't need grammar yet!

The whole not reading thing is part of why I'm ditching our 2nd language arts! Rylee is just about there, we are reading easy to build confidence and Reagan is still working on HOP.

We are just going to do fun activities to learn some basics... and as in my thread about a checklist... I'm going to take the month before we test Rylee on the CAT test to "cram". I plan on ordering the test early so I can read through it and make sure we have it all covered.
