We just found out that we are having a baby!!!! I am only about 5 weeks but my husband and I could not keep our mouths shut and have told everyone we have seen  . I know I have a lot of time to plan this, but I plan to cloth diaper, but I have never done it before and I dont know any one who does. So for all the moms that cloth diaper, I have a few questions for you. So far I think I want to use covers with pre folds. I would like to cloth diaper to save money. Is this the best/ cheapest way? What is the best way that you have found to cloth diaper? What is the best brands that of pre folds and covers that you have used? Thank you for any advise that can be offered
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!! I am SO HAPPY for you!!! Babies are wonderful miricles and if my husband would let me I'd have a forth immediately!! LOL We half cloth diapered for awhile (used prefolds under disposables. Covers were too expensive for us and at that time Paddy was allergic to EVERY diaper on the market). It IS expensive to start out with. What we did was buy prefolds everytime we went to WalMart until we had about 25 of them (for our 2 kids). Then buy about 2 or 3 covers a pay period. This is what we are doing too, now. We want to do it 100% but would never have the money to do it all at once. This is the covers we will buy: http://www.nickisdiapers.com/imagine-one-size-diaper-cover.html And we are buying 8-10 (again, for two children 18 months and 3 years). I'm not sure how many you will need for a newborn. We spend $50 every two weeks on disposables, so it MORE THAN pays for itself in a couple of weeks. I am so excited for you, and I will be praying for your health and the health of the baby!
Oh, I DO have some advice!!! Keep some disposables around for "special occasions". Like a weekend trip to Grandma's or something like that, when you really don't want to be bringing a bunch of dirty diapers home with you.
Oh Yea. I second and third that. We kept a package in the car so when we went to another city or someone's house for more than a few hours we could diaper them in the disposables. Granny's and Pa's don't want to mess with a dirty cloth! You'll also have to get a wet/dirty bag for when you go out.
Congratulations! I cloth diapered all 3 of my kids. Bummis Super Whisper Wraps with Diaper Service Quality (Indian Cotton, Chinese) prefolds are a good option. Proraps are also excellent diaper covers. This infant prefold package is good. Do not get prefolds or diaper covers from a place like Walmart. They may be cheaper, but they are not good quality.
Doesn't someone on here make and sell diaper covers? I thought they were awful cute, but my kids were beyond that stage, so I didn't pay much attention.
Congratulations! Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy, and a gorgeous baby!! Enjoy this happy time!!
Congratulations!! I also used (and am using now) prefolds and covers, for cost's sake. We use pocket diapers at night time, because I can stuff them fuller so that they don't need to be changed as often (and now that they're bigger, at all) overnight. I just stuff them with the prefolds. I just linked this site the other day. A friend of mine won a blog contest and sent me her winnings! These are, by far, the BEST covers I have ever used, and they are also the cheapest! Assunta Store is based in China, but it's run by an American and all profits go to the newborn at risk orphanage she works at. For the covers, buy $25 worth (that's 5 covers, btw) and get free shipping. On the pockets it's $75 and I'm hoping to find someone to go in with me to get some!! I found all the stash I had for the little stages used on Craigslist. I used prorap (decent, especially for the price), Bummis Whisper Wrap (very nice!), Mother Earth (these were my fave), and... some others I can't remember but didn't like (I think Bumkins). I have newborn and small covers to sell if you're interested! Maybe a few prefolds as well. And I have some WAHM dipes also, but most are girly (a few neutral or boyish) and I hope to get rid of them faster than what you'll probably know your little one's gender. Anyway, I have pics and breakdown if you're interested. Just shoot me a pm. But for new ones, I'd recommend Assunta Store VERY highly. Before I knew about them, I'd recommend Nicki's as the lowest cost on almost every brand you can imagine. Also look up Green Mountain Diapers for the best quality prefolds out there.
Congratulations! So exciting to bring another wonderful life into this world. There are a ton of great cloth diaper options out there. We clothed diapered our last little angel and saved so much money. Made us wish we would have done it with the others. I have a friend on facebook that is all about cloth diapers she has a nice stash for her little ones. I could pick her brain for you if you want me to. Again, congratulations! I pray you have a wonderful non-eventful pregnancy.
No advice, but congratulations!!! I remember helping my mom with the cloth diapers on my twin brothers when I was little. She still had them when I had my kids, so she gave them to me. I used them for burp rags and "nursing pads". I had severe postpartum depression and could not muster the strength to cloth diaper my own.
