What oh what am I going to do for next year (7th grade)? So far I know I'm going with Easy Grammar Plus and 99% sure I'm going with Apologia General Science. Where I'm really struggling with what to do is Math and History (maybe Geography). Our math has been MCP but we are in the 6th grade book and it only goes that far. BTDT with Saxon Math in 4th grade PS and don't want to go there again. Someone suggested I look at Math U See but they weren't sure about the grade level. Then there's history. I'm leaning toward wanting to do geography. I really like unit studies but I'm afraid we'll spend too much time on one thing and not get enough in. 5th grade we did American History and this year we've done World History. I just don't know what to do for next year. Any input would be appreciated.

Oh my goodness girl I feel where you are coming from!! My dd10 will be in 6th grade in the fall. I started a post yesterday about this and just from venting here I feel a bit better. I heard Apologia is good but it basically begins for 7th graders - too old for my dd. Math U See is what we use and if you go to the website you can print off a free placement test so you know which one to order. I am just looking into unti studies too.

Just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. I'm freaking about next year!

First of all, what is BTDT? It must not be good, but I can't figure it out. :)

The only other math I can think of for that grade is LifePacs. My youngest two liked them because they are easy to set goals with. When they finieshed each book, they really felt a sense of accomplishment!

Jackie just put up some neat looking history, but I forget which post. I'll go look it up.

Just a comment: If you come to an area that your dd is VERY interested then go with it! Let her explore it in depth! Somebody who wrote whatever you use put in different subjects, but who says you need to stop something she's intensely interested in to do something SOMEONE ELSE thought might be a good thing?! If she is so interested, then she will enjoy it and learn and retain a LOT more than if you hurry her on to another subject! She has the rest of jr. high and all of highschool to learn the other stuff! :)

Tiffany, my dd10 will be in "6th" grade next year also! We have kids about the same age and level! :D

I just say 6th, since that's what grade she would be in. But she'll be doing Pre-Algebra (Most likely Saxon's Algebra 1/2. She's working through Saxon's Math 76 right now), 7th grade Rod & Staff Spelling, 6th grade Getty Dubay Italic Handwriting, 5th grade Rod & Staff English, and the basically non-graded Mystery of History/Story of the World combination. I'm not for sure yet what science to do??? I'm still looking. So, she's all over for "grade level"! But that's why homeschooling is so great, you can meet them at their level and work through it and move on!

Have you looked at Singapore Math? It's supposed to be real good. If you've already done World and American History recently, I say go with Geography, just for a change.

I didn't realize we had kids the same age Deena! Cool!

Samantha is actually behind in math due to ps last year. We are getting there slowly but surely. Her reading level is high school level. I make up my own spelling and vocabulary lists for her because that too is on a high school level. Everything else is pretty much on point where she should be going into "6th" grade next year.

Tiffany - I printed some lists off the internet for spelling & our vocab. I think they were study lists for spelling bees? I don't remember. But they're expansive and really stretch my children's word knowledge. I'll have to look around to where I got them and try to post a link.

Depending on your kid, you can still go with Apologia Science! My Faythe is also going into 6th; there's no way she's ready for Apologia, but I think Rachael would have been. You might consider "Considering God's Creation". That worked well for me. It has a lot of TEDIOUS cutting and pasting, though. But there's a LOT of material covered, and I think it's covered pretty well!

My kids did Botany Apologia this year. The boys are in 4th grade and it wasn't too hard. Most kids I know use it in elementry school 4th and up. I have a friend who used the one on animals. The lady who loaned me the Botany used it for her K5 and 3rd grade last year.
