Standards are, indeed, leverage. The government already doles out funding based on how well each school implements the standards in place. So to think they will truly be optional is really naive.
What! You mean Santa and the Easter Bunny are not real. Well, if they are using the public schools as a test subject to eventually make their standards mandatory, their next step will be to regulate homeschooling. Taking the back door to sneak up on us. SMH
We tried the HWT program with my ds who has handwriting issues, and it was just as bad as everything else we tried, if not worse because the strange structure of some of the letters. Also, the link does not work anymore. Co-incidence?
I've heard people rave about HWT but I looked at it and hated the way the writing looked. I prefer a more traditional style cursive and chose A Reason for Handwriting. I do not want anyone telling me what style of handwriting I need to teach to my child.
It really will not matter to most homeschoolers. The fed can only regulate education by tying it to federal aid requirements. Homeschoolers do not get any federal aid. HSLDA would fight any attempts states made to specify a curriculum that must be used. Now as for enforcing that the only way they could do it would be to provide the districts with the money to convert their programs which is not going to happen. Our local district does use HWT and I hated when dd was doing it which is why we use A Reason for Handwritting now.
What link doesn't work - the one to educationnews.org or the one to the HWT core standards site? I just checked - they both worked.
Crazy! Although I don't think the article was well written, the whole idea of it will prevent me from every bying a HWT product. Another potential customer out.....
