I'm Gil and I live in Concord, NC (near Charlotte. Great place to raise children). I'm a stay-at-home/home school dad (not many of us) and my wife teaches 6th grade Science at a local middle school. We have two wonderful sons (12&9). 'Look forward to learning from all of you!

No, that's the one thing I don't do, cook. My boys (12&9) and I do everything else, though. Not because my wife's lazy (far from it). She's the one working outside of the home, so she deserves not to have to worry about housework. It's our way of serving her and showing her how much we love her. It also teaches the boys to be good husbands in the future.

Oh Gil, you sound like a great husband! Welcome!!!

My husband helps as much as he can too. Our oldest is in 9th grade this year, and my dh took over the Algebra. Phew, what a relief that was for me! Next year, with our oldest ds in 10th grade, he'll continue on in the math area, and we may add parts of other things also. My sons love the time spent with their dad (though they don't always love the subject matter he helps them with :) ), so it works out well! I'm glad he's willing to spend what time he can with them!

I think it's great that you're able to be home and homeschool your children! I can almost gaurantee that you'll never regret it!

    Did you just start homeschooling?

Welcome aboard, it's a great place!

Thanks, Deena, for your nice comments. You are blessed to have a husband that loves spending time with his children. Too many fathers underestimate the value they have in their children's lives. You're right, it'll never be regreted.

How I ended up at home with the boys was, I was in an accident in 9/95 that left me to where I couldn't work any longer. So my wife, Dee, and I switched roles. She went back into teaching (6th grade Science/Math) and I'm home with the kids. It was really rough on me at first. It was hard being a 30 year old man and having my ability to provide for my family taken away from me. But I came to realize that I can provide for my family in other ways that's just as (in many cases, more) important. God really helped me through all of that. We've been HSing for 5 years now and love it.

I have a great hubby who is my absolute helpmate in every way. We both work and "do school". He has been a very interactive dad from the beginning. He takes his role very seriously--wellllllll, maybe seriously is the wrong word...he is a 34 yo kid, but you didn't hear it from me  .

Welcome aboard! It'll be nice to have a man's perspective represented here. :D

    Gil,

Sorry about the accident, I bet that was really hard! But it's great that you've turned it into a positive thing for you and for your children! What a blessing that God has helped you work through that and come up with a positive solution!

On one of the other threads I told about how I started homeschooling. With my oldest and I at odds often, it was a tough decision, and I came into it kicking and screaming! But it was clear that GOd was leading us to homeschool! And what a great blessing it has been for me, and I believe, for my 3 great kids also! I love being with my children (well, most of the time! ), and wouldn't have had such a close relationship if I sent them off to school every day! I believe God gave them to me for a reason, so I don't want to give them away to someone else to raise! :D I can't believe that my oldest is now going to be in 10th grade next year! WOW!

God knows best, wish we'd listen to Him better! :D

True, no one knows or cares about your child's needs better than you. Great comments!

    graduation day

Deena, I think if I remember right you live WA. Will your son get a diploma or what? Who gives it to him? Will he get to have a graduation ceremony? Just wondering about your state. Any others who have a comment.

You remembered correctly Lorna! There are so many ways to get a diploma now for homeschoolers. If I was part of the Washingtion Homeschool Organization (WHO) I could go through them somehow. Ohterwise there are schools where he can take video, online or book classes from them, and they will make diplomas and transcripts I think. Anyway, there are even diploma making places (I just read about one last night) that will make out the diploma, you fill in the blanks! I'm not sure what we'll do. It's possible he could go to a Christian school for Jr. and Sr. years, but we're not sure about that. Hey, we're not even sure what we're doing this coming year!
