by about 35 days. I school from Jan- Dec year around and so I am finishing up next month--not that I will get a break or anything... I may take off a few weeks in Jan but I dont know it just makes it hard to start up again sometimes. Anyway I struggle b/c I work full time and try to hs also. We are doing ok and neither one of my kids are of attendance age yet (7 in Indiana) and my kids are 3 & 5. So the fact that I am short really doesnt matter, but I am worried about how I will get them all in when they are of attendance age. :?: Hopefully once they are reading well it will be easier to send stuff for them to do OR maybe I could get dh to actually do something with them! Any ideas??? Jill
Under age of attendence DON'T WORRY. I do the same, so I know why you're upset. Don't forget...field trips count...all extras count....just because you didn't sit down for "school" doesn't mean a day doesn't count. Also, since you're two years away from attendence requirements, they can't say or do anything about it. My 6 year old - first grader only schools 3 days a week. The other two days are "outside" things and lots of reading. I count them as school because he is ACTIVE, learning and doing stuff. HTH.
Don't fret over it! Even if you guys read a story on a day you work you have done school!!! It could be seen as reading or listening comprehension, and if you make that 15 minute read something that pertains to science or social studies you have covered two subjects.
I agree! Besides.. when they are older, it will be much easier for you to give them "independent" type work to do while you are working.. or time for them to read on their own, watch educational tv, etc.
You are right I need to count that- Now do you think I can count wrestling with dad for "PE" as school. They do that everyday. What about Lincoln Logs? hmm they do that about everyday too together.... what can I count Lincoln logs as??? =)
oh lincoln logs, shop for building, math for measure oh lets count the ways. LOL theres all kinds of tricks be easy on your self it will work out..
Kris is right! You could even count it as art, because they are doing building design.. I count everything ds does.. from building with legos to drawing to watching tv and reading his books, to playing with dh. You don't have to worry about the really techinical stuff for a long time, that I know of. Even then, most hs'ed highschoolers are so self-directed that they pretty much keep their own logs, from what I understand.
I count everything, too. Yesterday Zach doubled up on some of his assignments so today was devoid of actual book work. I still counted it as a school day, though. Because my boys sat down at the computer and wrote a short story together. So what if the first sentence was "My name is Darth Vader. I like to poop and burp and I command the Death Star."? Zach was practicing keyboarding, learning how to open a Word document, insert pictures from files, change fonts, and type when someone was dictating to him. They picked up my grandmother's mail and went across the street to visit her. That's community service time. They watched an old movie with her and my mother...History. Then they rode their bikes=P.E. Later they helped decorate the Christmas tree (art). It was a more educational day than some kids get in school, IMO.
I work full time too - it's a huge ask to hs on top of that, but doable. I think it's probably easier for me, b/c mine are older. So give yourself a break. That said, I have a range of educational computer games, board/card games, craft kits, educational DVD's and loads of books in the house, so if it's too hard, we watch Tv and play games, educational of course. And if they need to be out, lots of that stuff can be taken in a back pack. And like everyone else, I count everything. thier extra curricular activities that they do for fun, I also count e.g. gym, choir, cricket, percussion group etc, b/c they are all intrinsically educational.
and Jill, the great thing about Indiana is they are really relaxed with homeschoolers. They tell you to keep track of your 180 days, but don't require that you turn anything in at all!! It will all work out just fine!
Wow, you work and hs?! That is awsome, hats off to you! Like what everyone else is saying; don't worry about it now, they're little and everything is a learning experience. When they get older, there are curriculums that they can do on line, or with CDROMs (not to mention educatoinal games like Reader Rabbit). They'll also read on their own, to free up your time - and do projects. I wouldn't worry too much at this point.
My son played with Legos yesterday for 4 hours! I counted that as his Science (Engineering, design). He's so good at them! But yes...my daughter helping me cook is Home Ec. LOL.... Life schooling is so much more important, I think! Just because a book isn't open doesn't mean that learning isn't taking place.
Before I read any further on this thread I had to thank you for the good laugh!!! That is sooo what I needed this morning!
Yep.. wrestling is PE, so is walking to get the mail or walking to the corner store, riding his bike or get this one.. playing wii! Lincoln logs and legos are a million subjects in one, cooking can be math, home ec and science! Use your imagination! Everything is learning! My son is going through an I hate everything school phase. I have decided ok.. then history channel is now social studies, discovery, nat geo, and animal planet is science. I sit here and fret over him not being as far as I had planned in his books.. but then I think well he is learning something.
Since we live in Yellowstone, walking up to get the mail counts as PE and Science. I even count grocery shopping!
I belong to an Umbrella school that requires 180 days, but they make it clear 180 days does not have to mean 180 days of sitting down to workbooks! So long as they are learning it counts. My daughter does dance on a Saturday and you better believe I mark Saturday as attended on our online attendance sheet! I have a online friend who counts every day, she says so long as they are breathing it counts! The most important lessons a 3 and 5 year old can learn is how to play, so if they are playing well let them! and count it!
Sommer.. out of curiosity.. what do you call it when your ds plays Wii? My ds loves video games and I wanna get in on that!
