I am looking for a language arts curriculum which does not cover grammar... I like Easy grammar for that. I want something with creative writing, that would introduce writing techniques, mechanics, cover different literary styles and poetry. It would include brainstorming, prewriting, writing and editing in the instruction. It would be simple and fun and take about 15 minutes a day 3-4 days a week. This would be for a first grader who would be doing sentence writing and a fourth grader who would be doing paragraph and story writing, and doing some work on the computer. Any ideas?
I should add that I'm doing Sonlight next year, and I'm considering their LA but I'm not sure if it's the right fit...
I don't know if I am remembering correctly but you might want to look at Jump In. However, I may be way off.
I'm not exactly sure what curriculum are out there, but to me it sounds like you are looking for a Writing program only, rather than something that teaches all of LA? I don't have experience about specific ones (I tend to be pretty eclectic ) but here's one: http://www.writing-strands.com/home.asp Someone else with experience can give you a better idea though.
Learning Language Arts through Literature has a grammar part, but it is very weak. That's one of the reasons I quit it.
Years ago we used ACE for a short time. They separate "Literature & Creative Writing" from "English" and even "Word Building." It is workbook format that might fit the bill for the time frame you would like to stick to.
Thanks. I will look into writing strands. I tried to search for ACE but got several hits for different things. Which one is it?
I wrote this - it is available in book or download form. It is geared toward grades 3-6, but I am working with a 2nd grader this year and he is doing fine. You may have to do a lot of the writing for your first grader if it is too much, but this deal with poetry and different literary and poetic conventions. http://www.lulu.com/product/paperba...gContext=search_results/search_shelf/center/6
I have a 4th and 5th grader and I am going to try Wordsmith Apprentice by Janie B. Cheaney. They have to write at all different things they are "reporters" for a local newspaper. I have not used it yet but I hope it will help my children to write. I like the idea of Jump In and I am going to use it but it recommends it for middle school and my children aren't that strong yet.
Check out Kim Kautzer's Writeshop products. (writeshop.com) She has samples on her site I believe. Two week lesson plans on a specific assignment- with games, brainstorming, writing, editing... MT3
I'm hoping my person gets theirs today. Sorry it was a little late going out; the post office said it should arrive today!
