Can you help me figure this out? My ds18 started complaining about itchy feet about 2-3 weeks ago. When he first mentioned it, he also had some small rashy areas on his thighs. But the feet look normal. No rash on the feet. I had recently started using dryer sheets with fragrance, so I washed all his bedding and did not use fragrance. Seemed to help... for one day. But the itchy feet continued off and on.

Today his feet not only itch, but they are painful to walk on. The pain and itchiness are mostly in the areas of the ball of the foot and the outer edge of the bottom of the foot. No rash on his feet. Possibly mild swelling of the feet. He also has rashy areas in the areas around the knees.

Healthy, slender, no medications, no allergies. Only significant health history is congenitally missing left kidney.

Any idea what the itchy painful feet could be?

The only thing that comes to mind is athlete's foot. Good luck with healing whatever it is.

Yeah. Thanks. That was my first guess too, but there is no rash or cracked or peeling skin. His feet look perfectly normal. They just itch. And are painful to walk on. So, I don't really think athlete's foot. But who knows.

Hmmm...Has he had any injury lately? Did he recently get new shoes? Does he need new shoes? And it's both feet?

I would try ice, elevation and rest and tylenol if needed...

Maybe a really good calming lotion like Eucerin (comes in a jar)...... rash and itchy feet may be 2 different problems

Sounds like either he has a stress fracture, or more likely tightly fitting shoes or ill fitting shoes. They can cause all sorts of problems like that! The balls of his feet would hurt bc he's bearing weight on them.

My vote would be for an allergy manifesting itself. Could be anything, even things he's been fine with before.
(here's a quote from a Yahoo article about itchy feet):

Contact dermatitis due to an allergic reaction

This is also a common cause of itchy feet. It usually involves a reaction to something that comes in contact with the feet and sets off an allergic response. This can range from reaction to the interior fabric of a new shoe to a plant that you stepped on outside. The most obvious symptom is a red, intensely itchy rash. The best treatment is to determine what's causing the allergic reaction and avoid it. If you recently purchased a new pair of shoes or walked around barefoot outside, this could be the cause of your symptoms. Cold compresses and antihistamines can help with the itching, but steroid based skin creams may be needed in severe cases.

I'd try the antihistamines and pick up a script for the steroid cream. The dr will problably give you one without having to see him. It's kind of a basic cream for all itchy spots. We have it here for various itchies.

Keep your eyes open for other symtoms over time. Strange rashes and aches can be tick borne disease in early stages. Muscle and joint pain, and many other things that are not accounted for should be noted.

    I speak from experience.

Another thing I had wondered about and even saw a magazine ad for some medicine that referred to diabetes. No experience or real info, just a random thought.
