With Spring Break this month and with summer right around the corner, I thought this was fun to share.

Ok, so I don't know that I fully agree with the author on all he says about kids and their electronic devices / social networks... BUT -- I think he has some really cool ideas to get the kids actively involved in vacations during the trip. I really like the GPS idea, the email journal, and the apps one.

It's definitely something you can do for a 5 hour car trip or a trip half way across the world; very versatile! And some great teaching opportunities, especially with the GPS idea and the apps to look up history, etc.

We used to give our kids a good look at the maps we would be using and they could look at it and find out where we are and follow along to know what city was next. We also kept a travel journal so that they could look back on their trips, kept pamphlets from different places we would stop to be tourists or camp grounds, and even a few special items they picked up from the ground we kept in baggies.

    Those are fun ideas, too.

I think map skills are still important even in the age of GPS. I still use "real" maps sometimes!

It would definitely be fun to use a little technology combined with the good ole' pencil and paper.

Cool, we're planning a cross country trip for the summer. I'm still trying to decide how I'd like to get the kids involved in the mapping and in making journals, but I do like some of the digital ideas too.

It is fun! I like to watch my little black Ford Escape (that was one of the choices for an icon and I just happen to drive a black Escape!) zoom across the route!

I really can't say enough good things about the Escape. It's a decent price point (for an SUV); pretty good gas mileage (for an SUV); still retains the SUV shape/looks/bodyframe (that was really important to me) but wasn't a tank (it's just me -- I don't need tons of room). I drove a little Pontiac Sunfire when I first started driving and while it was super fun little car, since owning SUVs, I've vowed never to go back to a car as long as I can help it. Of course these rising gas prices aren't helping that vow. I filled up my tank for 48 bucks the other night. I nearly croaked. One of the reasons I got rid of my F150 2 years ago was for stupid gas prices!

how many gallons of a tank do you have ( sorry for change of topic here lol) but we pay 80 t fill the tank right now here in CA. Its sad, but I only have like a 18 or so gallon tank! maybe 20 if it were all the way empty.
I got away with 54 the other day and thought I got a deal cause the price had dropped, and I had a quarter of a tank already. I want a hybrid style Escape so I can do both styles of 'gassing up'.
I need enough room to bring my troups to camps to work and act each summer and we are barely making it now, I need to work to get more people who can drive to help me out hahah

    16.5 gallons total.

Our gas is at 3.89 right now and I had run my tank down just below the "50 miles to empty' warning. I'd have to check, but I know I get 20-something miles to the gallon.

As for the room -- I can sit 5 people. The backseat is a bench and can squeeze in 3 across but it's probably not the best ride, especially if they are larger adults. The front is two bucket seats with a console in the middle.
