I am thinking that my daughter should have learned about nouns, pronouns, adverbs and so on by now in ps. She will be going into 3rd grade next year when we start homeschooling. Will we be covering all of that? Also what is a good curriculum to use for this grade for Language Arts? I have found the Spelling that I want to use, but this it hard. Actually ALL of the picking of curriculum is hard come to think of it, lol!

I really like Rod and Staff. It gives a very strong grammar base.

They touch base on parts of speech, but they don't have to "learn" them in second grade. However, I chose to actually teach some back stuff with my son-so he actually learned those things when we started. You might want to do that.

Picking curriculum-kinda fun, kinda hard-TONS OF THREADS ON IT! Haaaaahaaa. Have luck.

Highly unlikely that your daughter will have learned parts of speech in second grade. When I taught second grade in the school setting, we didn't even touch it.
I am just now introducing it to my 5th grader. If my memory still works, I learned parts of speech in 6th grade.
Really no strong recommendations for curriculum in that regard. I'm actually using a grammar "review" book I found at Walmart to introduce the subject.

My son, who did 3rd Grade this year, did Easy Grammar 3/4 (which is supposed to be the older version 3 & 4th grades). He did fairly well with it. And it was, truly, Easy!. :)

Now...we're going to use the 4th grade level next year (I'll buy the new one this time).

For Writing, I used Writing Strands 2. WE have not finished, but more because of ME than HIM. He'd BEG to do it, and I wouldn't have time.

I do know, also, that the Scott Foresman Free stuff (which I think is sfreading.com?) has a free, downloadable, Grammar & Writing workbook from Grades K through 6. I used it in 4th Grade with my now 5th Grader. She liked it. I just like Easy Grammar better for ME. LOL :)

I'll see if I can find the right link and post it. I'm all about FREE.

We will be using Michael Clay Thompson's program for third grade. It goes into great depth so it would be perfect if your kiddo likes depth. It covers writing, grammar, vocabulary and poetry. Reading classics is part of the program too.

Were using shurley english and it has been great for my 2nd and 3rd graders. They start right off learning jinggles about the different parts of speech and classifying sentences. the songs are very catchy when you get used to them and I only have to hum a few bars as a hint to get them thinking in the right direction :) I really enjoy seeing my 8yr old being able to confidently identify subject nouns, verbs, and the 5 basic componets of a sentence. Plus were only in the 2nd ch!!!! I wouldn't say it isn't exciting or flashy, but it gets the job done...well!!!

When I took my son out of ps when he was almost done with the 3rd grade he knew nothing of grammar. Well I used this G.UM.(grammar usage and mechanics) by Zaner-Bloser. He loved it. Also he learned a lot from it. The program starts at 3rd grade. So, I bet your daughter was not taught it already, nor did she need to be. Also I found the Teacher book to be very helpful. One for grading, the other because it has a lot of suggestions to go along with the lessons.

Now if you read up on teaching children grammar. A lot of people do not suggest teaching grammar until 3rd or higher. I do know the program we are using now will start to hit on it some next year (1st grade). Which is alright with me, but I am not going to formally teach grammar (parts of speech) until 3rd grade.

I don't cover grammar more than conversationally with my kids before 3rd grade. I've always has a CM mindset about grammar. My 8 year old, doing 3rd grade LA is using Climbing to Good English this year. We had tried 4 spelling programs in the past 5 months as I thought maybe spelling might be a good idea to do. But after reading on the Simply Charlotte Mason site about Spelling Wisdom and the how's/why's of the set up and age level and getting advice from the author. I've opted to wait until she is closer to ten to do a spelling program. So she is using copywork daily and one page of Climbing to Good English. And she reads about 2 hours per day.
I feel good about this as I was going nuts trying to find a good spelling fit for her. None of the various methods worked. So I think for us, not doing spelling is the best course of action. :)

I am going to second the Rod and Staff recommendation. I am very happy with how much my girls are learning with their English books.

Easy Grammar is very thorough in teaching grammar and you can get it completed in about 15 minutes per day. Also, Winston Grammar is supposed to be really good, but I haven't reviewed it yet.

homeschoolreviews.com is a wonderful place to read full reviews on hundreds of curriculums by homeschooling moms.

We've tried a lot of different curricula and from what I've seen it's like a big snow ball. Each year the points of grammar are taught and built upon in more detail, but it seems like it's always being introduced again.
And don't worry about picking the right one, you will more than likely use a few different ones in your homeschooling lifetime until you find a good fit. :) I think one of the added fun things of hs'ing is discovering a new curriculum! :)
