Hi there! I'm doing a little research, debating about homeschooling my son - and I guess my daughters in the future. I am a former teacher, military wife stationed overseas in Italy, and on my way to Hawaii in April. I have an almost 6 year old son, an almost 4 year old daughter, and a 3.5 month old daughter. DS is in Kinder right now, and we really love our school - it is an on base school, but DS went in significantly ahead of his peers, and it's a daily internal debate on how we want to handle it. Right now, we're supplementing with about 30 minutes instruction after school, but I'm not certain it's what we need (-:
keep up the research, You will be able to figure it out by April...maybe. Much of it might depend on the school situation in Hawaii. I think just 30 min. of supplementation isnt too bad, but if it gets up to 2-3 hours then you might REALLY consider homeschooling. We finally took the plunge after 2-3 hours a night of tears over homework...so different situation, but it really just depends on your family and what you are looking for, considering each child. Good luck!
There are alot of military homeschoolers in Hawaii (as I have 2 friends there now and one moving there in April too). There are several military homeschool groups too. Our kids were formally in DoD schools too but when we moved to VA we decided that homeschooling was the best family fit and we've been going strong for almost 3 years.
