For our co-op next semester, I'm going to do Little House in the Classroom based on Laura Ingalls Wilder Books and the grade is 3-5 but for my question, I would like the kids to make a log house and I was wondering if anyone every made one and how easy are they. If anyone has made one if they can share how they made one. I would like it as easy as can be for 3-5grades. Thanks for any information.
from scratch???? We have Lincoln Logs and directions. lol I guess the next best thing would be to go to the hardware store and purchase some dowels and cut them into smaller pieces to stack. I think most make them from popsicle sticks - I think there are even directions for a house on some of the packages. Good luck!
She, that is right on the popsicle sticks there is direction to make a house. But the lincoln logs work well too. But, they are a little costly.
Could you make one out of paper towel tubes? We get people at church to save them for projects for VBS but I don't think I have seen a building made with them. It would be fun though. I need to mention that to Freddy. He is good at making things with the girls. They could do that this winter. Beth
Do you want to keep the cabin after words? My sister's daughter made a cabin out of those long pretzel sticks and peanut butter. It was so cute and tasted great. Although, if you plan on saving it, using food may not be a great idea. The ants would have a field day with it once it was stored. Patty
oooo pretzels and peanut butter sounds like a great idea! we went to the park and gathered a big bundle of sticks and came home to glue them to the sides of whatever shape our cabin would be, we used square tissue boxes for the little kids. luke wanted to frame his out and build it all out of sticks "the real way" he worked about an hour and 1/2 past everyone else but his cabin was fantasitc...its the only one we still have!
I think the pretzels and peanut butter would be fun. You could put it on a cardboard base, spread some peanut butter on the "ground" sprinkle birdseed on top of that and put it outside for the birds to enjoy. In our case we would get a few squirrels too. Beth
Beth, that is a great idea!!! Around this time of year we smear peanut butter on pine cones and roll them in bird seed and hang them from the trees. I have to try this. This way the cabin doesn't go to waste if it isn't gobbled up. Patty
I think you could do the pine cones and stand them up like trees around the cabin if you wanted to really go all out. Beth
Use a individual milk carton. Cover it with corrugated cardboard for the logs. Add windows and doors. This idea come from activities to do with Abe Lincoln. It told that his home was 18x20. You could measure the size and think how a family could cook, eat and sleep in such a small space.
