This year we are using The Prairie Primer and we would like to make homemade butter and I have some of the Little House Cookbooks that has a receipe for butter. But I was wondering if anyone has a easier receipe for butter. I remember reading about making butter in like little jars and you put the lids on and just shake and shake until it does butter and if anyone knows that recipe could they send it please. Any other receipe will be fine also. I would like to have easy ones.

    Thanks

I was told to put heavy whipping cream in a small jar and shake it for a long time. It didn't work for us, but I just don't think I was patient enough.

You have to shake it for a long time. LONG TIME!! It does work if done very hard. I think I used half and half to make it.

Yes, I've done this several times. Yes, you use HEAVY whipping cream. (***LIGHT whipping cream will NEVER turn to butter!!!) I put it in a jar, and shook it FOREVER. It takes a long time for it to start to turn, but once it does, it's done just like that! You pour off the buttermilk, then add a little salt.

Let us know how your butter comes out. I'm like JenPooh. I wouldn't have the patience to do it myself. I would pass it around and have the kids do it.
    Have fun.

Oh, yes, Sherry! You pass it from one kid to the next. The first time I did it was with a group of preschoolers. And you really don't get much butter. You can also make ice cream by putting your ingredients into a small can with a lid, putting that in a larger can, putting ice and salt in the larger can around the smaller one, putting on the lid, then rolling it around for a LONG time. I think there's a way to do it with a plastic bag, too, but don't remember how.

We made it too when I taught K. The kids did pass it around and it did take a while. I didn't like it, lol! I had a mom send in some homemade bread to put our butter on and that was good.

    homemade butter

Thanks everyone for your reply and responses. I know my children are looking forward to trying it. So we will see how it comes out. I'm sure you have to shake it along time. Thanks again.

Everybody have a good 4th of July.
