It's hard to believe I've been on here 6 yrs!! We started our hsing journey when Jane was in high school and having issues. A year or so later, Joyce asked (at the beginning of middle school) to be homeschooled also. It's been a rough and rocky journey!! Jane left home before she finished school and life got in the way - a now 18 month old with heart issues and she is now pregnant with her second child. Joyce - we have been all over the place with our schooling. We started off piecing together curriculum, she went back to ps for a semester, we tried unschooling and then went with K12 for a period of time. Add to that, she has been fighting major mood/anxiety issues which has made things hard. Well, a few months ago we started with a new therapist for her. K12 had already told us that due to her being so behind in her math, she couldn't use the program this year and suggested Adult Ed. Well, the therapist suggested the same thing so I decided to make some calls and see what we could do. Turns out they had a session starting soon and the timing was perfect for Jane to be done before the baby is born in February. Joyce just wanted to get her GED out the way and plans to attend a local tech school after the first of the year. She would "technically" be a senior this year so this would put her ahead. They took the TABE test and were both told that with the scores they got they would have passed all of the GED except the math and both were only off by a few points. They both qualified for the fast track program which is a 15 day session. Both decided to retake it for confidence purposes more than anything. They also took the Work Keys test as part of the program. They have the opportunity to get a scholarship to take the GED free of charge instead of the $80 it normally costs. One of the requirements of that is attendance and a silver grade on the Work Keys. Jane got hers right off and Joyce retakes the math tomorrow. She was off by 4 points. One of her LA sections she got the maximum of 7 points which she was told by the teacher is almost unheard of. They both retook the TABE today and Joyce had a major increase in her math. Both of them are really pleased with themselves right now. Not just that, I feel so much better knowing that I hadn't totally screwed up with them over these years lol! I hope this has made sense! They meet with a counselor on Thursday to go over financial aid and course of study suggestions. Btw, I'm very proud of both of them!!

congrats, its great that they are doing so well and will be able to get their GED's soon.

I homeschooled my for high school but the grandparents paid for an online private school and she did well with it.

My 17 yr old I have been worried about because she has aspergers and it seemed like she has been learning some but I wasn't sure if she was learning enough. I found a free GED class here in town and took her, the teacher tested her and said that she doesn't need to be there, she already knows every thing she needs to know to pass the GED so she will be taking it in a few months as soon as I get together the money to pay for the test.

I have a 14 yr old boy who is autistic, they never did put him into special ed in public school. They insisted that he can do the work and he just needs a little extra time to work on things. I didn't agree. He was also being bullied badly and they wouldn't do much about it. They were going to pass him on to 8th grade. Working with him at home, I find that he is still struggling with multiplication and division. He seems to be at a 4th to 5th grade reading level. He is having trouble with spelling, english. The kid doesn't know the difference between a noun and a proper noun, a verb or an adjective. His printing is very hard to read and he didn't know how to write in cursive. Yeah that sounds like he is at a 7th to 8th grade level to me (dripping with sarcasm of course).

My 8yr old is a 3rd grader this year and he is doing great with home school. He was doing great academically in public school too but he was not happy, he hated school, he was being bullied. Even scarier he was being bullied by the teachers. Of course the school still denies it.

Wow, Jennifer! Sounds like rough adolescence resulting in early adulthood? Glad it's working out great for them both!

Thank you to those that actually read that mess lol! I have a tendency to type the way my mind runs most the time which is all over the place. Part of why I wrote this is because I know that many of us question if we are doing the right thing and question if our kiddos are learning what they need. I have done more than my fair share of this lol! I am so glad they both are trying so hard to move on in their studies. I just submitted an application through the VA to try to get back to school my ownself! Thank you to all who have shown support over the years. I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through without it! I love that no matter what our decisions, I've never been judged which is huge.

dandrews - have you looked into scholarship options? My girls paid $30 total to participate in both fast track programs. They were able to take their Work Keys tests free of charge and will now have the GED test paid in full. They are doing this through the school districts Adult Ed program. They will meet with a counselor tomorrow to help map out their next moves. My youngest turned 17 and we have fought with anxiety/depression issues from the time she was very small. School was a constant fight - her sister would literally hold her on the bus every day. I didn't have a clue at that time that hsing was an option. I would have have started her from much younger! Irregardless, we've apparently done something right!
