I don't usually do b-day parties; my children gave them up long ago in exchange for two special outings around their birthdays--one with me and one with my husband. My neice, however, has come to live with us, and she would value a party with her friends more than more time with her aunt or uncle. Plus, she'll be sixteen which I suppose is a significant number in our culture. So, now, this nerdy aunt needs some ideas. My neice has decided on a masquerade party. I found some ideas on the web such as... Silent Beginning-- no one except the hostess speaks for the first 10-15 minutues. The guest then go around with a pen and paper and try to identify the other guests who are incognito. Conversation Tags -- guess will be given random tags to wear that say "Ask me about (insert a topic)" This will serve as conversation starters. Taboo word -- everyone I think has played a version of this at baby showers, but in this one, the banned word will be something other than baby, and we may even change it periodically through the night. The website I read suggested the word "mask". Anyway, everyone will be given a beaded necklace and if they say the banned word the person who calls them on it gets their necklace. The one with the most necklaces at the end of the night wins. Phrase -- a phrase (usually a somewhat strange phrase) is taped on the bottom of the plates. The guests must then try to insert that phrase naturally into the dinner conversation without it being detectected. Guests try to identify "the phrase" of others. Truth or Fib -- In teams of three, guests will tell two false stories about a particular topic and one true story to the rest of the group. The group will then have to guess who is telling the truth. That may be enough for a three/four hour night, but I would love other ideas if you have any. Thanks.
I'll ask Rachael. A friend of hers had one recently. Rachael didn't go, but am sure she can get ideas of what they did.
