So what sort of melter salt do you guys all use? (if you have lots of snow, like we do.)

We've heard that some kinds of melter salt can damage concrete, etc.

Just saying: Oh, we'll buy the most expensive variety available, doesn't seem too wise, without figuring why first...

    (Thoughts?)

I won't use salt on our sidewalks because of the damage. We sprinkle sand or chicken grit on top of the ice to keep from slipping. You can buy chicken grit at a farm and fleet type store. It works great and doesn't damage anything.

Before moving here I had never lived where it snowed so I bought whatever the cheapest salt was. I noticed the first spring that our driveway was getting pitted so I stopped using salt. I will drop sand or red rock (something they sell here) instead. If there still is not enough traction I might add a bit of salt too but I try to avoid it.
