I'd love to hear everyone POV on this.

I'm posing a question to everyone who wants to answer. I want this to be an open discussion...not a debate on why one person is wrong and you (general you) are right. :)

    So here is the question...

Why is it OK to microchip an animal to make them easy to locate if they are lost but it is not OK to microchip our children to make them easy to locate if they are lost/taken?

My short answer is that I really don't give two hoots if "big brother" knows where my dog is. I very much care that they not know where my children are.

I typed out a huge thesis as an answer... but deleted it because it was just too wordy.

Bottom line, I wish I could micro-chip my kids. When they graduate from college, they can have the chip removed. I watch WGN news every morning as I start my day and almost daily there is a story about a child, teen or college student "missing".

My dogs are chipped (they are rescue dogs) and as much as I love my dogs, I do not love them as much as I love my children.

Too much "big brother". I also don't believe prisoners should be micro-chipped. And if it starts off being "voluntary", how long before it becomes mandatory?

I honestly don't know if people are or not. But I do remember reading that it was being discussed.

There are a few people who have received a verichip implant to help them track their medical data. I am not sure how exactly it works. There are also numerous school districts that have children attach a chip to their backpacks or wear on a card around their necks so that they can be located if a teacher can't find them or if they are skipping school.

Personally I wouldn't chip my kids. I do have a dog we rescued that is chipped and I think it's ok. If the government wants to track my dog that's fine, but it's not ok to track my kids.

I don't think people are actually doing it. but it has been a discussion for a long time, that IF the possibility were to arise, would it be socially acceptable.

There are so many different views..mostly two..yes or no...no room for grey area.

Then there are people like me who are in the grey area. lol I guess I'm not too worried about "big brother" because as of now, without microchipping, "big brother" can pretty much locate anyone they want to.

I would microchip my children if I had the choice. Like a previous poster mentioned, I too would allow them to get it removed when they were 18. I'm not wanting to microchip the kids to know their every move, as I'm hoping to have an open and honest relationship with them. I would do it so that they can be found in a time of tragedy...kidnapping, running away, a huge storm that has separated us...etc.

Reallly? Then what would be the purpose of having your children chipped if they can be located without it?

I'm hearing that the child can decide to have it removed at a later date. Really? The direction this world is going, I wouldn't bet on that.

Let's look at gun control. "All law abiding citizens would be willing to (register their guns, accept reasonable restrictions, etc.). After all, why not if you have nothing to hide? Can you see twenty-five years down the road the government saying, "We only want to keep track of the criminals. If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear. Any reasonable, law-abiding citizen would be willing to do this." And, the opposite holds true. You want yours removed? Why? What are you doing that you're afraid of us learning about?

I wrote out a long response, but it doesn't matter. Yes, given the option, I'd have my kids chipped. Having them tracked by the government is much less gut-wrenching than the possibility of losing them.
