Since this is our first year to homeschool, I need a little assistance if there's anyone else on here that is familiar with MS requirements for graduation. #1: It is stated that they need one credit in Social Studies. Would History & Geography count as this? #2: What would be her options as far as physical education is concerned? She volunteers @ a non-profit farm that does hippo-therapy. She loves working with horses but I'm not sure if this would qualify for P.E. #3: If that doesn't qualify for P.E., what could I consider it? She normally works Tuesday & Thursday from 9 til 5. #4: What is considered "Social Science?" Thanks in advance for your input!
#1 Yes. #2. Yes. My oldest (15) plays soccer in the fall and spring. She also refs soccer, and helps out at her little brother's soccer practices. I count that as PE. My middle one rides horses; this year I also have her taking Middle School PE at the co-op, because the time works for us and because I want her being more active. But even if she didn't take the class, I would count her horseback riding. My youngest plays soccer fall and spring, and plays street hockey fall, winter and spring. #3. You could consider her volunteer work as "community service". #4. Not sure. Possibly something like Psychology or Sociology. (I'm assuming you're talking high school here!) Or possibly even Government.
Sure! Community Service makes a great elective. Plus, in some areas, public schools require a certain number of community service hours for graduation.
"Social Sciences" would be anything under the umbrella that used to be called "social studies": history, geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, government/economics, all that. Our annual achievement test uses the term "social sciences" instead of social studies.
I took horseback riding as a PE credit in college....best class ever!! (of course, it was more expensive then a regular PE credit but so much more fun!)
