My little one is 2 now, where oh where did the time go, but to the point when he sees something he recognizes he shouts "mama, MaMa, MAMA," until I answer him and then he points and identifies the object. Well today I thought I'd just see how much he knows so I put all his wooden letter/number blocks out and pointed randomly to see what he knows, here is the list of what he correctly identified and I have no idea where he learned it!!

    Letters:
    A,L,Z,B

    Numbers:
    9,3,4,8, and 7

    Objects:
Apple, Bug (for dragonflies and ants both), Plane, Fish, Cat, Rat, Sun, and Car (which he sometimes also calls a beep, beep)

I am so excited, but at the same time I'm puzzled as to where he learned all this from I know that I certainly haven't been "teaching" him deliberately. Though we do say the abc's and count to 10 I've never tried to show him what they are just yet.

I emailed hubby about it and he suggested that perhaps he was ready for 'school', I disagree I think he's learning just fine by playing and I'd like to keep it that way for a while longer (like 2 or 3 years longer), besides I don't need anymore to "do" right now.

    Congrats Mom!!

Call it osmosis, or mimicry, or third child genius- the younger kids just seem to absorb information that they hear and see! I, too, would hold off on actual schooling, but doing the same thing you did today (or the opposite, show the child and name it, etc) will have benefits for him, even if just done in small amounts.

woo-hoo! Those little babies are just sponges! Of course he's ready for school. He is in school every single waking minute! That is a learning lifestyle and you have nailed it perfectly, Birbitt! I miss those days with my babies.
    Enjoy!

    Nice!!!

I agree, the youngers learn stuff from the olders even when we aren't paying attention. My dd definitely had a head start in writing and counting just because big bro had been there first.

This is a whole new world for me, because my two oldest were so close in age it seemed like they almost did stuff at the same time or just months behind one another. They were only 16 months apart, so after the initial baby stages they really hit most things right at the same time. Potty training, writing, reading, all that stuff was pretty much together because of the ages.

This little one is amazing me constantly. He just seems to be moving so fast, and I just want him to stay little for a bit longer, he is my last and I want to hang on to each stage just a little longer, but he seems determined to go faster. :(

Congrats to all. I am sure he is listening to you teach the other two. If you let him watch any educational shows I'm sure he is learning from there. U do great work...

Babies are born learning! We and the world around us are constant teachers even when we do not realize it!

I wouldn't start "school" yet. Obviously living life has taught your little one a lot.
