I came across this article tonight about a boy being suspended because he drew what looked a little too much like a gun during typical classroom mindless doodling.

The site also has a nice review of the book "The Harsh Truths about Public School.

yes it looks kinda like a gun. But I also saw other things when I looked at it. I wonder what the child said when asked about it. I do think they need to be very aware of what is going on. And a good discustion needs to take place with this child to make sure deeper issue are not going on. It sounds like he is new at the school and that can be very hard.
Still greatful my son is home with me.

He said that he was just drawing, absentmindedly, but he guessed it kind of looked like a ray gun.....

Now, I think this kid should never have been suspended. Questioned? Yes. Investigated? Yes. Suspended for not breaking any rules? No.

It is absurd to suspend a child for doodling a gun. Period. How retarded.

What is wrong with drawing a picture of a gun??? I cannot believe that he was suspended. Does that mean if they draw a picture of a circle, it looks like a pill, therefore they are on drugs??? Or a cowboy with a rope, they are going to hang themselves. I hate to say never, but....

I covered up most of the page with just the "gun" showing and asked Elijah what it looked like, he said a house with people crawling on it???? I wondered if they asked the boy what he was drawing?

He said he wasn't drawing anything in particular. Just mindlessly doodling. He said in the end, it did kind of look like a ray gun.

I saw a building at first, too.

I thought it looked like a house, too!

When I was in the classroom, I had a wheelchair student who came to school with a squirt gun in his backpack. He is totally incapable of putting anything into/getting things out of his backpack. I assumed he was playing with his older brothers and friends in the neighborhood, and one of his brothers put it in there and forgot. Mom wasn't aware of it, so she didn't take it out. I wrote Mom a note informing her it was there, and to please remove it and make sure it didn't come back. Under the "Zero Tolerance" policy, he should have been suspended, PERIOD. Under common sense, however.... I try to work under common sense (though my kids would tell you I'm not good at it, lol!)

Have you heard about the girl who was arrested (handcuffs and all) for bringing a pair of scissors to school. Now, you tell me, when did scissors NOT become a school supply?

just showed my dd's the picture they thought it looked like a boat and people were jumping off it and having fun with all the smiles.. they said it didn't really look like a gun you had to look really hard to say it was a gun and I have to agree... my stars I think they were looking for trouble in the boy or something.

How STUPID!! That doesn't even look like a gun to me. I even asked the kids. My daughter said a boat or a school. My boys said that it looked like a street. I think school officials are paranoid over guns and violence. I could see if the picture was of blood or some other violent thing going on but this picture looked like something from a BORED, creative child. Those smiley faces don't look violent one single bit to me. I don't know how they saw that this looks like a gun. I just don't get it. I'm SOoOoOOOOOooOOO glad I'm homeschooling!!!

Just seeing this now...I know..I am slow. If I was the parent being told that junk by the school I swear I would have thought I was on Candid Camera. I would be looking around for the camera man. If no camera, I would have taken my kid permenately out of school.

The schools are worried about too many stupid issues and not worried about all the important issues. A picture a child draws is just that a picture! Now if the child had said, threatened or did something then I feel it should have been brought to there attention, but not a child drawing to pass time.

That's one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. I showed it to my 2. DS thinks it looks like a video camera. DD think is looks like a school with kids lined up outside.

I think the school saw what they wanted to see. Some welcome for the new kid.

    I though airplane....

Our family used to decorate our house big time for Halloween... I mean in the paper and everything. I got phone calls from the Principal and Counselors because my kids were drawing very black pictures with vampires.... luckily the local paper came out within the week with the kids featured in it as helping decorate for the event (non-profit, supported the local fire department etc). I would have freaked and probably HS'd a lot earlier if the school didn't understand about it (my Kin. daughter at the time would also bring a rubber fake rat to school instead of a cute stuffed animal - and she still sleeps with the thing ;) )
