I can't believe it - from a roly-poly grumpy newborn fourteen years ago, to a tall (over six foot!), thin young man today.

Even just last year, he was a totally different kid. Besides growing a good half foot, I mean. He hung around with a pack of boys, didn't talk much, and was only interested in playing violent video games. His thirteenth birthday party consisted of organizing his friends into two teams, all of them trying to kill each other in video games.

This year - he invited mostly girls to his birthday party! In fact, other than his two best friends, all of his guests were girls. And instead of war games they played a cute silly Japanese game where you roll a ball around collecting adorable objects (Katamari Damacy).

And they were hilarious to listen to. Apparently my son has turned into the guy who always has a slightly inappropriate quip to share (ie, jokes about "crabs" when those critters showed up in the video game). He's clearly also figured out how to get up close and personal without the girls getting upset. At one point I heard one of the girls say, "Seriously, you've been playing with my hair for ever!"

And my son says, "But it's so soft!"

So the girls decided they should play with his hair, and ten minutes later they've got it gelled and moussed into ridiculous shapes, which he had to come upstairs to show me and his dad.

One of the girls gave him a My Little Pony toy for his birthday. It's pink and has a button that says things like, "I feel pretty!" when you press it ...and he's been playing with it constantly since, even after the party ended and all the girls went home! A year ago he would have thought it was dumb and refused to touch it. My husband says it's because he likes the girl who gave it to him.

I told my husband that the boy didn't seem to be paying special attention to any girl in particular. But my husband's comment was, "He's too smart for that. He won't, at least not yet."

At the party, I overheard a girl say, "Girls like boys who play with ponies." Another of the girls innocently replied, "Really?" in a tone that suggested she could definitely believe it. Whereupon her friend said, "No, not really!" But actually, the evidence would seem to indicate that they do. And that my son, with his usual pinpoint social accuracy, has identified exactly what he needs to do to win them all over.

    He's changing so fast!

It is so funny watching them grow up and change overnight sometimes.
