I am so proud! HEre is the video of him doing up to 5 and then up to 6 Oh he is 4, by the way... will be 5 in September http://www.youtube.com/user/1173872#p/a/u/0/ZtzKTyrog0g
YOU ARE DOING THAT ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! Good for him and for you!!! If you want, give him a worksheet. Get a paper cup, and six counters. Turn the cup upside down, and put two inside. Then let him guess how many are under the cup. (Same as what you're doing in the video). Then, create a worksheet that has an "upsdie down U" with a number above the U. That's how many are on top of the cup. He needs to write the number "inside" the U of how many are UNDER the cup. The idea is to move him AWAY from the manipulatives to the more abstract. If you do this, start with using the worksheet and counters together at first.
Hmmm I can't see the video.. but congrats anyway! Jackie.. I love that idea!! I was laying in bed this morning thinking I need to focus more on numbers with the littles... Ry counts to 15 then skips to 18 for some reason now Reagan is starting to do the same thing
Thank you i would have to save that idea When we started math my neighber came in and she is a retired collage professor (she was teaching future elementary teachers) and she showed me how to do math with little ones. This is what she was showing. She said once they do that till 10 then its ok to introduce numbers on paper. But I would like to try the idea that JAckie was talking about =)
To be quite honest, the idea isn't original! It comes from the "Math Their Way" workshop I took long ago.
