So as most of you know we are going to Roadschool. However we are still looking for ideas of things to do on the way. I know each state has diffrent things in it so I wanna know what do you guys like to do on field trips for your area. I'm looking for plant tours, museums, historical sites etc.

I'm compiling a list of all places recommended. We are going to be living in the RV and traveling the country for hopefully many years so we could end up anywhere.

In South Dakota, there is so much I love. I love going to DeSmet and seeing the Laura Ingalls Wilder places and such. I love the Black Hills and that brings up tons to do. Down in Missouri there is a lot of history too. I grew up in Iowa and the Amanas are there, but I am not sure if they have what they had all those years ago. Also, I highly recommend getting books on tape for the trip. My children have learned so much from those and they make the trips so much more bearable..the time in the car and all.

We are planning a trip where we go up through SD and then in to Wyoming and then down through Colorado. Since we won't have an RV, we will likely head home after Colorado. I have always wanted to just pack up in an RV and just go for a while. That sounds sooo wonderful.

Well here in Wyoming there is a lot to go see. It really just depends on what you want and where you or if you will be going through here.

Examples we have natural hot springs, like in Thermopolis, Wy they have slides and all kinds of stuff at theirs. It is a really neat place to go. http://www.thermopolis.com/

Then there is the obvious Yellowstone, Devils tower, Independence rock, and such things like that.

We live in Georgia and there are a lot of places we enjoy going locally. I'll just list some names and you can find links with more info online.

Atlanta-the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Studio tours, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthplace and museum, The Zoo and Cyclorama (a 360* civil war painting and museum), Stone Mountain Park, The World of Coca Cola museum.

West of Atlanta, there's a state park we like called Sweetwater Creek. You could probably camp there. There are great hiking trails that run along the creek, and you end up at beautiful brick ruins of a Civil-War era textile mill that Union soldiers burned during the war.

North of Atlanta, there's the town of Helen, with German-style buildings, food, etc.

South of Atlanta, in Macon, there is a nice science museum. And another neat place near Macon is the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds. Further south, in Tifton, is a cool place called the Agrirama, where kids can go back in time and do all these farming and household activities that show what life was like here 100 years ago.

Toward the coast, there's Savannah--lots of historical sites and things to do there, and a huge military base (Ft. Stewart) to tour with museums, tanks, etc. And Tybee Island is a very natural barrier island that is nice to explore.

Of course, there's more, but these are the highlights of places I think are best to go with kids. Have fun!

California is the most awesome state, there is history and just plain fun.
columbia is a small town with gold mining etc,
Sacramento of course, near the state buildings has Sutter Fort, Native American Museum, Zoo, Old time Sacramento... and more!
Go north to Shasta area and there are tons of "Natural History" museums and places to see..
SF bay area there are Military history areas, and of course SF itself, There is the Surfer Museum in Santa Cruz, there also are many Missions, and the Mission bells , on the trail .. Uh, I forget the name of the trail but someone here will remember it!
You follow the costal route for that

Well in Texas it depends on what you wanna do and where you are cuz it is huge and has tons to do.

If you want historical you could go to the Washington on the Brazos state historical site - they have a celebration the first weekend in March for Texas Independence Day. Then there is Goliad, the Alamo, Battleship Texas, San Jacinto Monument, Fort Davis out in West Texas and Hueco Tank.

Of course you also have things like the beach and waterparks like Schiltterbaun and Splashtown. Or you could go to the hill country and float any number of rivers like the frio or guadalupe.

North Texas has Palo Duro Canyon which is supposed to be amazing - like a smaller grand canyon. They have the show Texas outdoor everynight during the summer.

Dallas has the American Girl store and Six Flags.

Austin has the capitol and Lake Travis.

Houston has a wonderful museum district, zoo and park system.

There are tons of state parks and national forests for camping.

There are so many things to do I couldn't possibly list them all!

For Colorado I'd recommend Estes Park - if you hit it in September you can see the big Celtic games! Also, there are quite a few "gold mines" to see in the mountains, Buffalo Bills grave is kind of a tourist trap but fun.

Of course Pikes Peak is a MUST see! Take the cog railway to the top and get some high altitude donuts - YUM! Plus, there are a ton of mountain towns to see like Steamboat, Veil, Aspen, Brekenridge, Idaho Springs...just traveling I-70 is breathtaking.

Then there are the mountain lakes like Grand Lake for fishing. Another mountain peak to see is Mt. Evans. There is a beautiful Lake up there and the highest rock garden in the country along with the famous bristlecone pine trees.

In Denver there is 6 Flags Elitch Gardens, the Children's Museum, the Aquarium, the Art Museum, the Museum of Science and Nature (GREAT PLACE!), and the Denver Zoo (which is quite nice because it is small, yet packed filled with state of the art exhibits).

Near Ft Collins there is the Budweiser plant that houses the Clydesdales. I think they still gives tours of the stables, but you'd have to check. It is right off of I-25, so a quick stop and then back on your way in no time.

Your roadschooling sounds fabulous! I am very jealous! :D

You forgot the Natural History Museum, DS loved it when we were there. There is also the race track if your a racing fan (my boys - DS and DH are). They take you around the track at like 100 mph.

You know, I was going to tell you for Ohio, and then figured you know as much as I did, lol!!!

Get a membership to COSI. That will get you in to MANY of the science museums around the country. Believe me, it will be worth it! Or perhaps a membership to the Columbus Zoo. They also have reciprocity to most zoos across the country.
