Sorry to hear your son a bad experience. Glad you are pulling him out. There is no reason a child has to put up with crap from grown ups or even other kids.

This is not quite what you asked but for the first day of school we did some fun activities. You may want to do something special for your first day of homeschooling. Some of our activities were:
    1. turned a shoe box or an oatmeal carton into a mailbox. We each decorated our own box by using die cuts or pictures from magazines. Through out the year we would put letters or hand drawn pictures in the other person's mailbox. We did this for years.
    2. the first day of school we took the bus to Dairy Queen and bought ice cream.
    3. decorated their school notebook.

Brandy, schools ARE NOT REQUIRED to uphold the IEP if you pull them. Some districts chose to, but it isn't mandatory, unless the law has changed (which is always possible!). We had a gal on here a good number of years back whose son had some hearing loss. She from Ohio, and had been told that she wouldn't get free speech if she pulled her kid. I honestly thought that wasn't so, I so checked it out. I had a friend with a Down's daughter who homeschooled. Her pro-homeschooling sister worked as an advocate for special needs children at the state department, and checked into it for us. Free curriculum is also up to the individual school district, as is letting homeschooled kids play sports or take just one or two classes. Or it could be on a state level in some places.

I though IEP was individual education plan? Is that right? My son is in EIP-Early Intervention Program-for language arts (part of the reason we're homeschooling next year-as he IS on grade level now but they won't put him back in regular classes. I want him out before the kids realize EIP is for kids having trouble in LA or Math and he starts getting called "dumb, stupid, retard" by the other kids. If he actually still NEEDED the class it'd be one thing, but he doesn't....)

The question is WHY is he "at level". Has the EIP brought him up to level so he can now function on his own, or do they think he needs an adult to work with him individually to KEEP him there? If the second is true, they are right in their decision. And not knowing your son or what is going on in the EIP classroom, I can't say.

They told me at the conference in the fall they expected him to be out of EIP by December (his reg teacher and his EIP teacher) He's now helping the other students in his EIP class who are still having problems. And his EIP class has 25 kids in it, so it's not one-on-one time. He KNOWS the stuff they are doing in that class (his EIP teacher told me how to tell what work is done in there and what is done in regular classes)

They told me he's still in it cause he can't 'blend sounds' as in c-a-t = cat (sounding out words) well, uh YEAH he CAN. I taught him phonically at home to sound out his sight words, he does it for me daily, but he's not doing it for you at all? The sight words he has trouble with are the ones you CAN NOT sound out, the ones you can sound out, he knows, so he gets those right.

THey are not required to uphold his SERVICES listed in the IEP. They cannot pull an IEP-it's a permanent record of your child's record in the classroom. It's one thing to say we're not gonna provide you the services you get at school (which is fine because after K ALL services are school related....ie Physical Therapy will be writing or hand coordination.)

TeacherMom-in answer to your question: Personally, our children have a choice about homeschooling. If my son wanted to go back to school, I would want his IEP on file. That's why. Also, for quite alot of services that come from the state (at least the 2 states I have had to deal with) having an IEP made paperwork and testing with agencies MUCH easier.

And as for free curriculum-its only because of the time of year. If it was for the whole year-not 1 or 1.5 months, it would be completely different.

You know-regardless of what's happened with me(we've been fighting IEP stuff and district/state stuff for 7 years and multiple kids now....)-I really hope it works out for you!

So they said they were going to throw his IEP out, as if it never existed? That's CRAZY! Yes, I think I'd want it on file, too, if there was a possibility of returning.

Yep. We have ALL thee meetings all the time....cuz my son has some serious behavioral issues. ANYWAY.....so when they upped his class size, and the scope (K-6th grade in one class! seriously?!! ech) we spoke to them about pulling him out. Suddenly it was...well he won't get services.

We were like, ok-that's fine. (He gets behavioral services at home and don't feel his school servicees are actually helpful-just kinda a way for the school to get $$....but that's another topic.) THEN they were like well then we'll pull his IEP.

So I had lawyer husband at the next meeting. BOY WERE THEY NICE THEN!!! hahhahaha.....

and I don't think my kids will ever choose to go back-but they're young still.

I just did this myself and our Christian School gave the the remainder of his workbooks (we aren't using them though), but we decided to just let him have fun, do art projects, visit the library, zoo, science center, and we do lots of reading. I ordered curriculum for next year and it's here so I'm planning out and we'll begin first week of May.
