Need some input for my daughter for next year. She was identified as LD in PS w/diffuculties with comprehension. I have read many posts about math curriculum w/lots of pros and cons about each one. I know we all have our quirks. What do you ladies feel would work best for this type of child. I am thinking of algebra w/ Math u see, TT or saxon. She is a visual, hands on learner. Math used to be a struggle until we started homeschooling. Things are starting to click. I don't want to lose her now.
For that type of child, I would try the Math-U-See, I think. It's very hands-on, and is considered a very good program. That's jmho of course!
I use Math U See with my 6th grader. She dies very well with the visual hands on approach. The program is meant to be followed at the student's pace so you have no pressure to move along until your child totally understands.
Maureen, I think that after reading your post on Math U See I may want to try it with my kids, my dd, does well in math, but I think my ds, would do better with it.
Thanks ladies. I think we will go with math u see. Do I really need the manipulatives with algebra and above?
From what my friend says, her children have done MUS since they started, so they have the manipulative idea down. She says they don't really use them anymore. However, if your dd is a tactile/hands-on learner, they may help keep her from being distracted by something else, and keep her doing hands-on things, which is how you said she learns best. Maybe she won't use them after awhile either, but to start with, especially since it is a new program, it may give her some security, and help her to better visualize the concepts she's working with.
hey everyone i'm from ga and am going to hs my son this fall he will be in the 5th grade and i wain't sure what type of cirrcilum to use but after hearing yal talk about math u see maybe i'll give it a try he is really good in math but the rest is still up for options so if sny one has any suggestions i'm all ears . karen

Don't worry about the repeats...it happens quite a bit! Do you want one curriculum for all subjects? I'm not very familiar with them; I tend to pick and chose a lot! You probably wouldn't like most of what I use, because it is Christian-based. Sheila might have some good ideas for you. Many of us are doing Ancient History right now. While what I use is Christian, I'm pretty sure "The Story of the World" isn't. It DOES include the Bible from a historical point of view, from what I understand.
Let me make sure I understand what is being asked.....we were on vacation (well dh was at a conference and we tagged along) and so...I'm playing catch up on everything all around. 5th grader...going to try M-U-S what other subjects are you looking for? History? We like SOTW. You'd want to get the Kingfisher Encylopedia, too, at that level. Have you read the Well Trained Mind, yet? I personally think that is a nice starting point to "wet the tongue" of some of the things out there. Let me know what you are looking for and I'll throw in my two cents worth. ROFL btw Tina is in the middle of the move and has no internet, yet.
she, i'm not really sure i need everything math, science ss, english i'm not sure what to use yet that's why any advice would be helpfull i've been thinking about diffrent cirrcilums for each subject i'm not sure about the math u see yet i'm really thinking saxon math but like i said i'm not sure of anything yet except i know i am going to homeschool this fall that's all i'm sure of yet so all suggestions i'm all ears thanks to all of you that's trying to help me. karen
