Do you have to use an accredited program to receive your high school diploma? Also, has anyone heard of the NARHS?
No, you do not have to go through an accredited program. In fact, there are some that are very strict-such as A Beka-if you get their DVD program you will have to agree to watch every video and do a certain number of days, etc. There is a great article on this: http://www.homeschooloasis.com/art_issue_of_accreditation.htm It gave me great relief, because my son just started high school and the fears were overwhelming.
thank you I have researched into Abeka and Alpha Omega's academy. I came across the NARHS where you can use any curriculum you want, pay a fee to fall under their school. I will check into that article!
This may help: http://www.homeschoolreviews.com/reviews/curriculum/reviews.aspx?id=164 Here are others as well: http://www.homeschoolreviews.com/reviews/curriculum/default.aspx?id=132
oh okay, sorry I even looked at one of the articles and dint see it typed out. It sounds like people like it from the reviews. Personally my dd went to a private school forher senior year annd it is not acredited. She will have a private school diploma but will attend the community college for a year or two then transfer anyway. IT works fine, ds did the samething his private schools tried to get acredited but never put enough effort into it so private school diploma got him into school, he did not have to get a GED either!
In IL, homeschools are considered private schools. That means that not only do you not have to find an "accreditated" program for your kids, but also that you get to determine the requirements for graduation. Once they have fulfuilled the graduation requirements that you have set, you can grant them a diploma.
thank you I'm so happy I found this forum! At times I feel I have so many fears and questions. I've sat on the internet till my head hurt trying to find answers on my own. I don't know why I didn't just come here first!
This is the most active forum I have found. There are other good ones, but this one is always active and has a lot of different viewpoints and philosophies presented.
