Well this weekend we had some new arrivals. My husband was going into the shed and he heard a bunch of meowing. Low and behold one of the "wild" cats around here had babies in there. The bad thing was she must have had them last week, we did not know it, and we locked the shed for two days before we found them. I was afraid they would all die being locked in that HOT shed without their mother for 2 whole days but I got some kitty milk and have been feeding them and they seem to be doing pretty well. I am thinking they are about 1 week old or less. They dont have their eyes open and still have the umbilical stumps. Its going to be a long two months, I have to feed these babies (all 6 of them) about every two hours for quite a while. I have a whole new respect for mama cats lol.
Awe! While I don't envy the 2 hour feedings, what an amazing opportunity this will be for your family.
Mama cats ARE neat! You mentioned that you had a new respect for mama cats. I have to share my kitty story. My folks live in the country and have many outdoor cats to help keep mice population down. One of the cats "Mert" was pregnant and ready to have her babies. She made it right inside the barn door. Mert's daughter from the previous year was right by her side, and kneeding her pregnant belly....like they do when they are making a bed to lay down....it was like she was her mid wife and was massaging her stomach. My mom and I just watched in awe for the longest time. Mert would moan or make a squeak and her daughter would keep massaging. It was something else. Wasn't trying to hog your thread but cats are neat creatures and if I had as many kids as "Mert" did, I'd want respect too. LOL That is all that kitty did...reproduce.
We recently found 2 orphaned kittens and had to give them kitten formula. One of them died after 2 weeks (4-5 weeks old) , but the other is getting so big and doing really well!! I think he's about 8 weeks old now.
Aww thats a neat story. Cats are neat animals. I do hope these kittens live, they are so little I worry about them. I would post pics but I have no clue how to do something like that, sorry.
Raising kittens is hard work without the mother, but it's worth it. Our cat had kittens about 4 1/2 weeks ago and they are very curious right now. Our other cat has started "mothering" the babies when the mother leaves the nest for a while. She will let the babies crawl all over her and nip at her and all and then they go to sleep next to her...it's really cute it's almost like the kittens have two mothers..one for milk and one for snuggling and playing.
@scooby: Now that I am pregnant, one of our cats want to knead my tummy all the time... Not comfortable!
I have a story too. We once had two gray cats who both were due to have kittens. The first one lost her babies so when the second one had hers they shared them. They both fed them and cared for them. It was so sweet.
