Hi, I am Dainelle--Dani for short. I have been married for 5.5 years to James and I am a part time working mom of 2 (so far). They are DS- 3.5 and DD-1. We discussed education for our kids prior to getting married and always thought we would send them to PS. Well about 2 years ago, I was watching an ABC special about PS and from that moment started researching home school very intently. My DH was not for it at first, but I would share with him things I discovered and it has finally clicked with him. He is totally for it, YAY!! So I am a bit early, b/c I am not really keen on doing structured work for pre-K. I really do not plan on doing anything structured until 5 or 6 unless my son shows interest before then. I have lurked here and bit and it seems there are lots of posts and support. So I hope to get to know you guys better and learn more about the education choice we have made.
Hi Dani so glad to have you aboard with us. Its wonderful that you are doing your research already for homeschooling it shows your going to be a great homeschooling mom! Catch you on the boards! Sam-aka frugalcountrymom
Hi, Dani! I have a son the same age! We are just doing fun stuff this year--mostly BFIAR and unit studies.
Hi! I too have a PK kiddo! I like that I am calling myself a "homeschool" parent this year because it has given me the opportunity to do a trial-run at how I want to keep records, set up my day schedule and also figuring out what approach is working best with my son right now. Good luck and I'm glad to meet you.
Thanks everyone. We are doing starfall.com very loosely this year. I find it so funny that he actually knows most of the letters sounds already, but still does not know the name of them. I am thinking of doing a trial run starting next fall when he is 4, Just to get a feel of planning, records and such. SoonerMama what type of unit studies are you doing with your son?
I think we are going to do a snow one next...assuming we get some snow soon! We are finishing up gingerbread men right now and then we will be on hiatus until mid January when my husband deploys. We have done several BFIAR units like Caps for Sale, The Snowy Day, Goodnight Moon, and Corduroy. If you like a literature/unit based approach you should check out HomeschoolShare (http://www.homeschoolshare.com) for TONS of great ideas. Ami, who runs it, drops in here, too, and she is extremely helpful and has tons of great ideas! ETA: As far as just unit studies, this spring we are going to do weather, and probably a farm one. I would like to maybe do a knights and castles one, too, and maybe one on camping. Hand of a Child has lapbook kits (maybe that's not the word I'm thinking of, but it's late!!) that you can buy--and they have sales every so often. Pam (Sixcloar) who is on here does quite a bit of lapbooking, too. She posts all kind of pictures on her blog. In fact, I need to check it out now...
Thanks, I will look into it. If I find something I think he will like, I may start after the holiday.
Hope you like them! I really need to sit down and decide what I want to do this spring. At this point, though, I am just trying to get through Christmas and see my dh off!
Hi and welcome! I have three sons who are K5, pre-K (3yo), and a baby. Because of doing K with my 5yo, my 3yo often does similar work. I don't know that he's actually learning any of the K stuff, but he's having fun, so I'm happy with that. We LOVE lapbooks! We also use a lot of the units on Learning Pages. I like learning pages because they can both do the same unit, say dinosaurs, but at their own level (one K and one PK). We use Starfall a lot, as well.
Hello felloow Louisianian!! Welcome!! I have a 7 dd that is in 2nd grade right now. You will find La is quite nice to hs in as they wont bother you as long as you send a letter of intent to hs once a year once the kids become the compulsory school attendance age (which is 6 or 7). Fell free to pm if you need any info!! Good luck and enjoy teaching your little guy!!
I have already looked into the laws here and I have friends who are already homeschooling. I am happy that we can just send in our letter of intent and be done with it. I have also become semi-involved in a support group, just to get acquainted with everyone. Plus I am learning that more and more of my friends plan on doing the same, so hopefully we will have lots of friends.
welcome never too early ;-) welcome!!! we are parents of 3 children (4,2,1) and a fosterchild (5) who lives with us for a while. Homeschooling in The Netherlands, Europe (only the youngest 3, the fosterchild needs to go to ps by law)
From Louisiana Too Hey Dani! I'm from Louisiana too. My dd is in Kindergarten this year. I love FIAR. Actually, I wish that I would have known about BFIAR. We also do How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. It's a bit repetitive, but I think that it's effective. I do have trouble with math, though. I feel a bit lost when it comes to math. I am not a fan of curriculum, but I wish that I could find some kind of guidance.
Nice to meet another person from Louisiana. We are not doing anything official yet. I will be looking more into that for next year when he is 4, but I do not plan on being really structured until 5 or 6. Hope you like it here, everyone is really helpful and friendly.
