Hello Everyone! My name is Amy. My husband and I have a DD, kindergartener (5), and a 3 year old, DS. We are starting HS on Dec. 1st. I am a little nervous. We are having to leave our Christian school b/c of our daughters crazy, hectic gymnastics schedule. Any advice would be appreciated. I am in the processes of setting up our extra bedroom to serve as our "room"
    Hello again!

Georgia is a pretty homeschool friendly state, but those monthly attendence records! We are the only state that has to send in anything monthly. Oh, well.

What area are you in? I might know someone near you or of a homeschool group, if you are interested. PM me if you don't want to make it public.

You'll do fine. You don't have to have a "school room" unless you just want one. Some have them, some don't.

My oldest is a "now-retired" competitive gymnast. I wish we had homeschooled during those years....that would have helped alot.....except hubby was deployed to Iraq and homeschooling her plus 2 littler ones probably wouldn't have worked as well :)

Glad you found the HS Spot.

DD will compete level 3 this year in kindergarten. She's the youngest they have ever had compete L3, except for the owners DD, she was 5 also. I am nervous but excited. I do not see another way she can keep up with gym schedule and school. she does the TOPs program also at Gym....it's crazy...and we drive 45 minutes to gym, but she loves it so we are working with it! thanks for the support

Take some time to read whatever you can on HSing and figure out what you want to do. She is probably going to need to "deschool" and unwind, so I'd consider just making December your Christmas/holiday/down month and "officially" starting in Jan - but I don't know how GA's monthly records work or what the requirements are. Just remember, cooking = math, science and even art ;), so that holiday baking can be some serious (lighthearted) school time, at least as far as the records go!

Good luck! If you have any questions, ask. No one has laughed at me yet - at least, not to my "online" face. ;)

She sounds very talented! For my daughter, it is piano. She started the week after she turned 4yo and I could not find a teacher in my area who would bother taking a child that young so I drive one hour to Canton to a teacher, who began specializing with really young children. My daughter is now to the point that her skill is being held back by the size of her body. It is probably not as hectic as a gymnastic schedule, but with at least one hour practices every day, special performances, and playing for the church at least once a month, it gets intense.

I am about two hours away from your area, so I don't know much but I might be able to point you to the right direction to get information.

Here is a good website for Georgia homeschoolers: http://heir.org/

Most all the homeschoolers I know use their Letter of Intent and Attendance Forms, which comply with the state law and require no more information than is required by the law. There are some counties with their own form, but ask for more information than is required.

I know that there is/was one well organized homeschool group with junior and high school level classes in the Lawrenceville area because I knew the pastor of the church in which they were having the classes. Unfortunately, I don't think I ever knew the name of the group! However, there are many homeschool groups listed on the heir.org website under "support groups."

My county allows me to do them on-line now. It is so much easier, especially with me traveling. You're right though it can be a pain. I used to forget all the time until the last day and then it was a mad dash to find a fax machine.

Welcome to our spot! So happy to have you here. I hope you learn a lot. Jump right in with questions.

My advice is don't stress over it. The first year is full of adjustments. It will all come together.

I know some counties have provided for faxing them and it would be more convenient, but even if they offered it in my county I would not do it. I know of a few cases in some of those counties that the BOE claimed not to receive them and the families were investigated by DFCS.

In my county, they request we send them to a special school building rather than to the office of Superintendent of Schools, but that is not how the law reads, so I send them in according to the law and then they can file them wherever they want.

I have always thought it would be interesting to schedule a homeschool field trip so that we see exactly what they do with the paperwork we send in. Just think about how many hours (and how much tax money) it takes each month to file those forms with about 28,000 being homeschooled across the entire state of Georgia.

    thanks

you guys are AWESOME!!! I am totally inspired now! I really think I can do this. I am very organized so Hope that will help. My husband talked to his sister today, she is the principal at DD's school. We were nervous what she would say but she was very supportive and said we had to do what was right for our kids. All grandparents are super supportive, so we are off to a good start. I am excited to try to tie in Abby's love of gymnastics to some of her school lessons.
    thanks again for the support!

Timkel mom, do ya'll travel a lot in an RV? how does HSing in it work out, or do you home school then. my parents have a large motor home and we can use it anytime, I love the idea of traveling to new placing, learning about new things, and schooling at the same time!
