    Hi!
After the last disastrous year in public school, I've decided to homeschool my 10 yr old son. I have the full support of my husband, and close friends.
I've already complied with all of my state's (Florida) requirements, and purchased a curriculum. I'm just waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

One thing I am having trouble with, is finding a local support group, or co-op.
The only one's I found in my area are Christian, and I am not.
Should I just join one anyway?

You can ask them if they are inclusive of others. The one I belong to is. And that way you can still take advantage of the benefits of their support system. Or hang out at your local library you may find some secular homeschooler's are in your area and just haven't formed a group yet. Or you can start your own group and put pamphlets in the library.
Best of luck. Even though I belong to a group though it is still very much a secluded life thus far.

We don't have any support groups at all where I live.We discovered one in a neighboring town and we are thinking about joining. Are there any towns close by that might offer what you are looking for?

No, everything county-wide that I have found so far is Christian.
And I live in a pretty big county. :(

Where in FL are you? See if there are any homeschool bookstores in your area, they might have a list of some other local groups.

    I'm in Broward County Florida.

Do you mean, like an educational bookstore?
There is one near my home, but they don't sell homeschool curriculum. They told me that they used to, but not anymore. And they only used to sell Christian curriculum.

Welcome to the Spot. I took my 7 year old son out of public school and I'm getting ready to homeschool him for the first time. Keep asking around about a co-op group. I am Christian, but I found a local secular group through a friend who homeschools. It's open to anyone who homeschools, but nobody knows about it unless they are invited. Maybe there is something like that and you just haven't found it yet.

    Welcome to the spot!

Have you looked at yahoo groups? Asked you local library of other groups? Check with your local rec dept.

All 3 of my groups are 'Christian' groups but they welcome secular homeschoolers as well.

I agree-you might try to start up your own group, ask the library and local book stores (especially used book stores) and thrift stores if you can post your info or leave fliers around.

Also-if you see other families with school age kids out and about during school hours-strike up a conversation. You might make a great friendship that way. ;)

There is also a secular homeschool forum http://www.secularhomeschool.com/forum.php at least it would be online support until you can find or form a secular group.

    Hi-
I also have a 10 year old son who didn't have a great year (he got great grades but he hated school due to bad behaved kids in his class that made school miserable for him) and we also live in broward county.
We are christian and joined a co-op but I also found 2 other groups that are secular..one in weston and the other was called alternative homeschool educators. I can find out the exact name of the group in weston if you'd like.
we're in sunrise by the way.:D

welcome, I hope you find something

oh, I have a question what are you looking for a group for, for class or just to get him with others if that is so, then you can check the library for things they have going on, check your ymca or ywca and see if they have any thing. Put him in karate or something like that if you want him around others.
