Hi, my name is Jamilah and I am the mother of a 13 year old Autistic son. He has been in public school until now and we are very disappointed with his progress. We never knew how bad it was until he got to middle school and everything went haywire. He hates being there and now we find out that they are teaching to their standards in a way that he can pass the test but then forgets it all. Anyway now comes the time to take matters into our own hands and teach him ourselves. I'm thinking of going with the curriculum from Verticy (a branch of Calvert). Any help, guidance or well wishes would be appreciated!
Welcome to the board! I certainly understand where you are coming from- I thought my ds (an A student) was doing great... until I pulled him out and put him in grade-level work. Really a heartbreaking discovery for both of us.
Yes Meghan, that is just what happened to us... I fell so stupid for letting it go on so long. He is in 7th grade but probably reads at a 4th grade level and does not remember any of the math concepts that he learned... its really scary what pubic school does to special needs kids.
Welcome to the Spot. You have found a great place to get support and encouragement. There are many others with special needs, too. My ds15 has Tourette's Syndrome, but now that he's home again it has hardly been an issue. Often less stress and more stability equal better results from the get go. Again, welcome!
