I am new to homeschooling and my DD is in kindergarten. I had not planned on homeschooling, but when I looked into the school options in our area I was less then pleased. So I here I am LOL My biggest question right now may not be a problem for most but it greatly concerns me. My daughter and I have been going through the homeschool program for about 4 weeks now, and my DD is almost finished with all text books that is designed to last the whole year, Science, Math, Language Arts, social studies, plus I plan in technology, craft, and PE time also throughout the week. I do not push her to keep going, she wants to keep doing work, sometimes 10- 15 pages per book each day! On Fridays we review the work from the past weeks, and she seems to understand the information that was learned really well. I guess my question is has anyone experienced this? Can learning to much to fast be a problem? Any information or suggestions are greatly appreciated P.S. I tend to over think and worry about things too much, and my DH doesnt think that this is an issue but a good thing.
What are you using? I would say if she's anxious to learn and eating it up, take advantage of the attitude - as long as she's comprehending and remembering the information. I'm all for child led learning - she will eventually slow down (my oldest was very much this way in the beginning - I used to have to hold onto her workbooks so she wouldn't go too far ahead!). Anyway...
Great for her wanting to learn so much! She will eventually slow down. If you want to slow her down a bit you can take the pages out of her workbooks and only give her a page or two a day from each subject. Make sure she is really comprehending her work is important. My oldest dd and youngest dd were just like this. With my oldest we used Abeka and what was supposed to take her four to five hours took her one to two! We did a lot of thumb twiddling! I actually thought I was doing something wrong. LOL! Good luck and best wishes for an amazing time.
Welcome! I completely agree with this! No need to worry for now. If she's having fun, that's JUST as important as anything else.
As long as she WANTS to do that much, let her go. One of the problems of "one size fits all" education is that it doesn't allow children to learn at their own pace. Evenutally it will get to where it's a bit more difficult, and she'll slow down!
I think it can be a problem because it can get expensive to keep buying new curriculum Otherwise, let her have fun. She will slow down when it starts to get a little harder for her.
If she finished the K level stuff go ahead and get her first grade! Don't try to find more K stuff for her... it will only frustrate both of you. As others have said, she will slow down. Either she will hit the wall of her abilities or she will get bored. Either way, you won't have to worry about taking a break and doing other things if she's ahead of the game! Make sure you offer lots of time for her to play outside, join group activities with other kids etc. It sounds like you are doing a great job Mom!! Edie
This might be a great time for you to look at doing some unit studies. Just pick some topics she wants to study and do indepth on that. there are some great unit studies you can buy on line or sometimes even library systems have them.
Yep! This. Otherwise, I'd go with what everyone else said. If she wants to devour the information, as long as she's retaining a reasonable amount, let her.
My dd went through K-1st in the first year as well, she ended up graduating two years early, so its no big deal. Homeschooling is great for kids like our dds who don't want to be stuck in a seat waiting for the rest of the class to catch up. I would let her keep going, once K is done go on to first after a quick review. Don't worry its normal! Lol, My ds finished one book in third grade in his History class because he wanted to keep going with the work. the books were units so it was one section but I let him sit up there in the play fort and do the whole thing, he got everything right too!
Welcome. I agree about letting her go at her own pace. Is the program you are using part of a school district program or are you referring to curriculum you purchased from a publisher?
Thanks Thanks for all the advice! I am glad to hear that I shouldn't be too worried about this. As for the questions about the program she is in, she is currently using the school districts program. This makes me glad that I choose homeschooling over public schooling after seeing how fast she is going through the work, she would have been very bored and not progressing in normal public school. Thanks again for all of the support!!
