Hello. I hope y'all don't mind a non-homeschooler popping in to learn from your discussions. I have no children myself. But I have many friends who either oppose government schooling in general (e.g. government shouldn't be in charge of children's minds any more than it should be in charge of running grocery stores or doctors' offices) or who feel that government schools are harming their children in one way or another. Yet most of these friends say they see too many barriers to homeschooling (both parents work, education is for experts, etc.). By being here, I hope to get some insights that I might be able to pass along. Hope that's okay with you. lagatta
Welcome to the Spot! The best advice I would give your friends is the age-old adage: "where there's a will, there's a way". Not that I advocate being intrusive or anything . But sometimes it's nice to have information at your disposal when friends ask for advice. And for that, you've come to the right place.
Another thought... Perhaps you might think about starting a new thread with some of the common objections that your friends see as impossible to overcome. Then we could give you some tips on how to respond. (again... I said respond. Just to clarify that these ideas would be used if your friends bring it up.... not to "butt in". I don't know if you're that kind of person or not and I'm not assuming that you are. Just reiterating that I'm not endorsing intrusive behavior )
Thank you all for the warm welcome! And Actressdancer, that's an excellent suggestion. You're absolutely right; it's not my intention to try to butt into my friends' lives to get them to do something they don't really want to do. And as a non-parent I'm really, really aware of how unqualified I am to intimately understand my friends' parenting burdens. I'm just surprised at how many people say, "Oh, I'd love to homeschool, BUT ..." or "I can't believe what my son's school just did; I wish I had a way to get him out of there." It's those people I'd like to be able to offer some help to. Heh, maybe if the thread Actressdancer suggests draws well, I can just point my friends toward that & you homeschoolers can do the persuading. Thank you again.
