I see most movies as going this route. They sneak all this nonsense into the movie, apparently to desensitize the viewer. It's very, very rare that we go to the movies, and a big reason is you can't trust what will be in there.
Is Nim's Island disney? Cuz I think it is a law that one parent is killed off prior to the story in a Disney movie. (except Mulan) My boys liked it. We watched the deleted scenes and the boys wished they had been kept. Mainly the ones about her fantasy friends. Alice (from Wonderland) and Huck (Finn) with a scary appearance from Blackbeard. We had a discussion about agoraphobia and that lead to claustrophobia...so we learned something. Funny. I just bought Bridge to Terebitia, planning on renting the movie as a reward for reading it.
We just watched Nim's Island tonight (pay-per-view). We all liked it a lot. Now I need to coax Zach to read the book.
Naaaaah.....Disney just decides to make all the old fairy tales! LOL I mean have you ever read the original writings of Cinderella? Rumplestilskin? Sleeping Beauty? Rapunzel? Hansel & Gretel? They are gruesome stories! I had no idea. I'd always read the dumbed down Disney versions. One year my husband got this beautiful fairytale book for our oldest. I started reading them - OUCH! If fairytales were made exactly the way they were written, it would be far worse. NOT that I'm a proponent for Disney.
Just to poke more fun at disney... We went to Moab Utah right about the time that there was that big bruhaha about the Phallic symbol in the castle on the movie Little Mermaid... We had laughed about it, because as my daughter (10 at the time) noted...it didn't look like ds's penis because he was uncircumcised. Anyway...we found a rock in Arches Nat. Park that looked very much like said spire of the castle...so we thought that maybe we should boycott the Park. I mean really, any child might have seen it. It was right there in the open!! We also found penis shapes in sticks and in the layers of rocks and on the petrified wood we found...Terrible. so of course the girls went straight home and started hanging out with odd boyscout leaders. OK, sorry...had a co-worker once who asked if my sarcasm ever got me in trouble. Who me. Nooooooo.
I remember that whole thing with the video cover. You know I never would've even thought of that had there not been such an issue made of it. Funny, how you can find things when you look for them. Got a great laugh out of your post!
I agree We saw nims island ppv and although i could have done without the mom dying overall i thought it was good. My two dc (8 and 6) were so amazed when she said she was hsed! I think it made them realize they werent alone. we are in a group everyother friday, but during the week except for church on Sun and Wed we are home on account of high gas prices, but they did go down so that should help. How scarey is Bridge? I remember reading the book and loving it as a kid, and almost rented it, but then wondered if my two were too young, what do you all think. i remember one of he kids dies, but that is really all i remember except loving it! any advice or thoughts on the movie would be helpful. Also wanted to give you girls a heads up on movie reviews. Plugged In Online Movie reviews is awesome. It is christian based, so it gives spiritual content as well, but it gives all the goods, the bads, and the ugly. I have found it to be very unbiased and would recomment it to anyone wanting to take kids to a movie they are unsure of. They have movies in the theatres and all the releases, you can search for any movie. Just wanted to let you know in case your interested.
Thanks so much for sharing. I will have to give it a look now! If nothing else, it'll be great to be able to point out a homeschooler on the big screen to the kids!
My daughter just watched Nim's Island and loved it. She was thrilled when we found the book at the library book sale today for 50 cents!
We just watched this, too, and found it not too bad. I'm surprised the dad was nubmskull enough to leave the girl alone, but if he hadn't, the story wouldn't have worked!
I agree..the whole mother being dead and how she died..and that that was Nim's favorite story...was awful. That part I really do not like.
