A local school district refused to call a child's mother after the child hit his head during recess. The school is playing he said/she said about the details, but what they admit is that they didn't call the mother because they only do that if there is an obvious injury. Meanwhile.... an ER trip and CAT scan later, the child clearly had a concussion.

so I guess internal injuries aren't serious because they aren't obvious?
    ridiculous!

What if it had been the nurse's child?

Something like this happened to my son which is one reason I wanted to hs. But my child got sick and was throwing up on the bus on the way to school and when he got to school he got sick two more times and the stupid school didn't feel the need to call me so I could come and get him.My poor baby had to sit there all day with throw up on his pants and shoes. I called the school the next morning and went off. They said well he didn't have much fever so we just let him stay. My little bay was from then on picked on b/c he smelt like throw up that whole day.I was an still am really mad about this.

    I would be too.
One time the school nurse trimmed my son's fingernails all off into the skin. ALL of his fingers were bloody and he couldn't use his hands for 3 or 4 days. I swear I am not making this up. I was FURIOUS.

my son is MR and he pinches himself sometimes badly. I guess she thought trimming his nails would help, but apparently the nurse did not know how to do that.

They got a certified letter from me, plus I took pics and kept him home for like 4 days. I made it clear to the teacher that NO ONE is allowed to trim his nails ever again. He still to this day will only let me do it, and that is only if I have candy or lots of coaxing. :(

Sadly this does not surprise me. Last year my neighbors children were involved in a bus accident on their way to school. It was a minor accident and none of the children were injured HOWEVER, she was not notified until 2pm (the accident happened at 8am) and the excuse the school gave was "no one was injured and there were a lot of parents to call, we notified you as soon as we could". When her children got home they told her that the police where there and asked them questions (I do believe that was illegal to speak to a minor child without a parent present) about the accident then sent them off to class. The children never saw a nurse/dr/paramedic so who decided that the children weren't hurt?

oh, yes I remember that in the news!
Just tried to sweep it under the rug and hoped no one would find out I guess. If I remember right the bus driver simply wasn't paying attention and rear ended another bus. Is that the same incident? well bus accidents are probably more frequent than we realize.
Buses are nasty places for kids anyway :(

No, the bus driver didn't hit anyone, a truck rear ended the bus while it was stopped at a red light.

oh, ok that was different then. We had one here where a bus hit another bus. Then they were like well no one was hurt, don't say nothin' kids!
    Of course that didn't work.

That is so frustrating! My nephew gets migraines and the school would never call home or allow me to send medicine (even with a prescription). When I asked his teacher why I didn't get a call for his migraines (They called me about everything else!!!), she said they just thought he was trying to get out of class. The only problem is he has serious migraines and often throws up EVERYWHERE! When I asked that they inform whenever he starts complaining about a his head that they call me, they told me headaches were not a reason to call home! This is just one of the MANY reason I know homeschool him!

I used to suffer from terrible migraines. I wouldn't wish them on anyone, but the people who said they aren't a reason to call home should get one long enough to see what it is like. I am pretty sure they would understand then.

    I agree with you.
I think the term migraine gets tossed around so much that people that have never had one think its a really bad headache. I get so irritated when someone is up moving around but complaining of a migraine. Uh no if you are able to still function then what you have is a bad headache not a migraine. When I get migraines I have half of my body go numb, I am sick to my stomach, I can't look at the light, and I can not do anything but lay down and try to sleep. The first time I got one I went to the ER thinking I had a stroke! That any school could downplay the seriousness of that is discusting. Especially when he is throwing up! I mean really?!

I used to get Migraines frequently as a teen/young adult. For some reason I've not had one since having my oldest child. I was lucky though my High School would call my mom every time I got one, but really they had no choice since I couldn't sit up in class, and couldn't read my textbook.

I think that might be because 'a really bad headache' doesn't have a 'name' for it.
I went to the dr for headaches, but how do you describe it? well it hurts?
sharp pain, dull? throbbing? light sensitivity? well sometimes, but not always.
I think there is just a huge range or symptoms and feelings and descriptive terms, that it becomes a mess. I have sort of a brain fog? forgetting things and feeling like I can't get my thoughts to work with what I am doing. I get very cranky, and short tempered. I sometimes can't find the words to say what I want. It doesn't hurt persay, it just feels weird. How do you describe that? so the short version, when someone asks me what is wrong? I just say I have a migraine.

There are different levels of pain associate with migraine. My husband gets rare migraines where he's as described... physically ill balled up in a dark room. I get bad headaches combined with "lightening bolts" in my vision usually starting a few minutes before the headache comes on, usually triggered from bright light. My doctor told me they are migraines, and while they are really bad, I can function and they don't come close to the pain of my husbands... so I think that's part of the confusion. Migraine pain really can vary in severity.

The school should never make the call though. When in doubt... call the parents!

Thats a great discription. Right before I got my last migraine, and this is going to sound crazy, I was typing on the computer and started getting an aura which is pretty typical of my migraines, but what freaked me out was that I forgot how to spell. I mean I knew what I was trying to type and it wasn't a particularly hard word but I could not spell it. It was very strange.

In the area where I live they have a few bus accidents every year. It is sad because my husband told me that when he was in school his bus driver was drunk almost every day! That is why if my children ever have to go to ps they will not be allowed to ride the bus!
